Magic Jack question Empty Magic Jack question

Post by shana Wed Feb 19, 2014 4:14 pm

I will be traveling soon and don't wish to take my netbook with me but do want to take my MJ plus.
All rooms in the hotel have Wi-Fi. If I plug my MJ plus into a socket and a phone will it work or do I need a modem near by or do I need my netbook to plug into?
Thanks
I

It looks like magic jack plus uses Ethernet and not WiFi. Unless the hotel let's you plug it into their router it will not work. If it does indeed have WiFi, you will need something (computer/ smart device) to configure it. Do you by chance have a smart phone? This would be a simpler solution.

The brand spanking new gee-whiz bang MagicJack 2014 claims to be wifi-capable and has a little "wifi light" on it and everything but they have yet to upgrade the software to make use of wifi - you still have to plug it into a modem to use it.

Magic Jack (as as seen on TV) has always been a joke in my estimation. I sucked for it when they promised a local area code and phone number when they never came through. Once you burn me once, I don't go back to the well!

Even if they get WiFi working on it, unless they put a screen and a way to input credentials, you will still need a computer/ smart device to set it up...

I have been using MJ+ for a few years now.
Aside from having a unit fried by our fluctuating voltage, I have had no problems.
To answer the OP's question: In a hotel wi-fi environment it will not work without a computer to provide a link between the MJ device and the hotel wi-fi.
Hope this helps  Beer

Try the free Android MJ application which uses WiFi.

The wifi issue aside, my MagicJack Plus has served me well for a few years now - local area code and number (I had to pay an extra $10 to get a Canadian number but, oh well...)

When my last renewal came up I renewed for 5 years because the service has worked so well.

I totally agree with Axijic. I use a local Toronto area code number ($10 a year) so most of our friends/family can call us for free.

The cell phone app is a bonus for free.

I've been using my MJ Plus for about 3 years now. Normally I have it connected directly to my router. Right now it is plugged into my laptop, with a cordless phone then plugged into the MJ. Works just fine with the computer connected via wi-fi.

Similar experience for us.  If the hotel has ethernet ports in your room,  you can connect just fine.   If only WiFi, you'd need your notebook or phone combo.   We've even connected on public buses out in the boonies, using a small laptop and  new-friends "hot spots" from their phones.

We've been happily using Magic Jacks for 7 years now,  for my wife's work, our home. and for our 82 yr-old mom,  and been very happy with them.  All 3 are on our Colorado "970" area code, making calls with family and friends cheap & easy, especially with other gringo friends who also have MJs, making free calls across town (in Mexico) for the women to have their important gab-sessions - far cheaper than Telcel.  It's been a life-saver when traveling - using wifi access in airports,  restaurants, and hotels to make important phone calls, especially when travel plans change due to airline bogies.

I was an early magic jack customer and while it worked most of the time. I found some of the other VOIP options to be better.  I have use Net Talk which plugs into Ethernet directly or into computer directly. I have found Net Talk to be much more reliable than Magic Jack (older type to be fair). Support is awful with all these companies in my opinion so good luck.
