Hi

Not having heard of Functional Medicine before, I did a guick google on it. This is, in part, is what Wikipedia has to say about it...

"Functional medicine encompasses a number of unproven and disproven methods and treatments and has been criticized for being pseudoscientific."

So, much like Homoeopathy, therapeutic touch, Reiki, etc, yadda, yadda. You spends your money, and takes your chances.

I wish you good luck in your search.

Well, shame on them. It is incorrect. I suggest you do some research if you have some interest in really knowing how these doctors treat illness.

Functional physicians actually do the work and take the time to find the cause of an illness, and address that rather than giving a fancy name to a symptom and a fast prescription to eliminate those. That's my lay person explanation.

In any event, I wasn't looking for advice on whether or not I should use this type of doctor. My post had to do with locating a Functional physician.

Hi Fastfox,

I sense that you have likely already drunk of the cool-aid, so I'll just add a few points of interest here for those who may read this and be on the fence as to the efficacy of FM.

What is FM...
http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/functional-medicine-new-kid-on-the-block/
http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/functional-medicine-ii/

Here's a piece on the founder of FM...
http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2009/09/08/dr-mark-hyman-mangles-autism-science-on/

Functional Medicine University (evokes memories of Jethro Bodine, no?)
http://www.functionalmedicinetraining.com/1002/reserved22.html

From the text...
"Most people complete the Functional Medicine training in 6-7 months, with about 10 hours a week of study."

That's 6-7 months of watching videos. Nothing to cause concern there. It would seem that most of the people associated with FM, at least at Functional Medicine University (Really!), are Chiropractors. No red flags there.

A quote from Tim Minchin seems fitting...

"By definition", I begin
"Alternative Medicine", I continue
"Has either not been proved to work,
Or been proved not to work.
You know what they call alternative medicine
That’s been proved to work?
Medicine."

It's from "Storm". Look it up on Youtube.

Fe, fi, fo, fum(ctional "medicine"). I've previously written about such dangerous quackery as commonly--not medically--understood chelation "therapy," so will not repeat it here. At the time of my original posting, someone else quoted P. T. Barnum.

I'm sure there is.
As long as there are adherents to such quackery, there will be "doctors" offering the service.
Why not?.......it makes both sides happy.

Why bother looking for a "functional medicine doctor" when there are so many established curanderos/shamans/witch docters in the area?

What a nasty remark!

You can attack the topic all you want, but I think criticizing someone personally (whom you have never met) is pretty cowardly.

If you have something constructive to offer on the topic, I am open minded, but have no interest in personal attacks.

That type of medicine might be a little too advanced for some people. lol!
Looking for something more functional.

It is true that some only have a few months training in Functional Medicine, so due diligence is important. I will look at all the links. There is much wrong with conventional medicine. With all the doctors in the US, US citizens are the sickest in the world.

I am not here to convince anyone of anything. Again, I simply wanted information on the physicians.

The state of health of Americans has precious little to do with conventional medicine and everything to do with the stupidity, gullibility, credulity and the sedentary lifestyle of said Americans. A bag of Cheetos and a Coke, I'm sure, doesn't appear in any food group that I'm aware of. I would hazard the guess that a little exercise and proper nutrition would go a long way to fixing that problem. ...And as for some physicians, I wouldn't let Dr. Oz or Dr. Phil touch my goldfish never mind a human being. Half of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class, I know I've met some of them (statistic was never my thing. I could be wrong here).

Fastfox, you said, "Functional physicians actually do the work and take the time to find the cause of an illness, and address that rather than giving a fancy name to a symptom and a fast prescription to eliminate those." You will find several doctors here who do that unless having a degree in medicine disqualifies them.
I have never heard of or seen someone claiming to be a "functional physician" though so I can not help you there.

Thanks for responding without criticism.  Glad to hear that there are several doctors that will do that.  Actually, I wasn't familiar with them until just recently. They are few and far between.   They do not practice what people call alternative medicine.  They are properly licensed physicians with this specialty.  They use lab work, etc. as needed as any other doctor would, however, they have a higher level and more specific criteria, rather than dumping everyone into so called normal levels.  Everyone's normal is different.  They really look at the whole picture.

Our experience has been ,so far, that although doctors will ask a bunch of questions to come up with a diagnosis, that so-called diagnosis is often just a name for the symptoms (arthritis or whatever) which is actually the result of whatever the cause is.

We have been treated by your usual PCP and specialists and so far, chronic is still chronic because causes are never found.  It's all been quite difficult, frankly.

PCP in the states equals Primary Care Physician.
Firefox, have you spoken with Dr. Juan Pablo Loza Mendez?
He is an excellent diagnostician, really listens and can probably answer at least some of your questions.
He is at Calle Guerrero 141-B in Chapala. His phone number is 765 54 77.

People believe different things.

The owner of the Purple Door Spa in San Juan Cosala does colonic cleansing? I would bet he would know where to direct you. Those types usually know of each other.

What a bunch of hooey.
