The new version of Google Translate

Post by papa chango on Fri Jan 16, 2015 11:34 am

Get the new Google Translate application. It seems to work really well.  It features instant translation when the camera is aimed at some text.

It's interesting technology but in the past I've found Gooogle translate rather lacking, one example I remember is when it translated an article from the Informador where it stated that "goat horns and wives" had been discovered in the trunk of a criminal suspects car.

Cuerno de chiva is Mexican slang for an ak-47.  Of course there are occasional errors when using google translate but as far as I'm concerned it is really pretty accurate.  I think any translation software would have trouble with slang.

What was the word in Spanish?  Esposas?

I didn't make this post to argue about the ability of google translate to be accurate 100% of the time. The new version has some new abilities that I thought some people would be interested in since a lot of them have problems with Spanish.

Yes,handcuffs in English in this context.
I'm sure it's a useful tool and the technology is amazing,I was only commenting on the fact that some of the translations are so badly mangled as to be funny.

I've found that Google Translate does a pretty good job when translating well-written Spanish. It doesn't do so well with the Mexican language.

This would suggest that Google needs to get its act together since there are a whole lot of people (at least 120 million) speaking Mexican. "Mexican" being the Spanish language spoken in Mexico. There is a similar thing going on with Portuguese portuguese and Brazilian portuguese. The number of speakers will probably win out in the end. The parent countries of the languages sure get their linguistic shorts all knotted up.
