Yahoo Phone bit the dust
Google voice won't work from Mexico
Skype won't let me login for an account
Magic Jack requires hardware

I did find the Talk Free app for Iphone from Magic Jack but would like something for the PC
Anything without hardware except a headset?

I use Net Talk.  Which is a box that plugs into your cable/phone modem and you plug a phone into it. Works fine here.
You can buy five years worth also. Support is online no phone number anymore that I could find.

I'll try that but the program directs you to a web site to create an account and it's the web site that won't respond

Turned off Windows firewall, disconnected, closed browser .... and same thing. Maybe a Telcel thing?

Maybe. You aren't running any other virus protection such as McAfee or Norton? They also have firewalls.

I'll try another browser.   Avast has a bunch of "shields" but I turned them all off.


Same thing with Chrome, IE and Firefox

I am running Firefox with Avast AV and have no problem.
Telmex is my ISP. You mentioned Telcel as your ISP.

I installed Hotspot Shield and didn't help (thought it was free but no)

Lots of talk about Telcel blocking Skype or VOIP in general ... so my Iphone app may not work either.

With or without an account I can't access their secure site which must be required

No, that's long been a rumour, but a false bit of information.

HotSpot Shield still has a free version: http://www.hotspotshield.com/ They may advertise heavily and bombard you with "upgrade" messages...

Just moved here a few weeks ago... but am using my Google voice account to make and receive free calls (to and from US numbers) over wifi at the house. No problems with it so far. FWIW.

If you setup your Google Voice account up north ... that may be the difference. Same with Yahoo Phone when it was around. When I tried Google it said only for US and Canada

Yeah, perhaps that's why. I've had my Google Voice account for quite a few years and am not sure if they're still signing people up. I keep expecting them to shut the service down.

Well ... when I use the Skype program to login it tells me my name or password is incorrect so it's checking.

I'll just wait till HelperGuy PM's me back and I may get lucky
