Perhaps someone in the know can shed some light on these questions? Is there any agency that protects rights of renters? Being new to MX I'm not familiar with the rules and such. As I've heard, a recent new law collects "tax" from property owners that are renting properties. Apparently it's a sizeable amount and some owners have chosen to skirt the tax and are renting/leasing under simple housesitting agreements with tenants. How can that be legal? How, as a tenant, can one protect themselves and assure that they aren't taken advantage of further, if such an agreement is entered into? Does the property owner just skate away when any rental issues occur? Appreciate your input(s)!

I would like information on how the tax on rental properties is calculated.
I've heard all kinds of speculation, but few facts. Would appreciate some info from those have been "legal" landlords.

I am renting in GDL. My Mexican landlord told me that if I pay in cash he won't add tax to the rent. From what I understand the small time rentals are not charging the tax here in GDL.

I imagine that applies to those who rent privately rather than using an agency.

Go and talk with a tax accountant as every situation is quite different.
