Has anyone heard about the risk to our computer of having Adobe Flash.

Google and Mozilla announced this week that their Web browsers will be dropping default support for Adobe Flash, citing the plug-in software’s newly discovered vulnerabilities to cyberattacks.

Should we disable it? They recommend to upgrade to 18.0.0 version. That's the one I have. Do you trust it?

You should also note the players. They didn't kill java (Oracle) when it had same type problems did they??? I wouldn't trust anything Google says regarding Adobe products. They are not friends with each other. Adobe will fix product if a problem exists or you can turn it off if all this worries you.it Personally I am not doing anything in response to this. Lots of stuff like this turns up and is fixed in time.

Trust????? Not quite sure how to answer that. I guess I trust them.

Your answer is good enough for me. I won't touch it as I might even cause more problems because I'm not the smartest to handle anything to do with computers.
Thank you.

The writing has been on the wall for quite a while. Flash is dying a slow death, yet it continues to gasp for air. After some new vulnerabilities were discovered, many have been calling for the plug to be pulled.

Do you think there should be an industry-wide halt in Flash use? Let us know what you think.

Facebook's Chief Security Officer called for its demise the other day.

"It is time for Adobe to announce the end-of-life date for Flash and to ask the browsers to set killbits on the same day," he said. "Even if 18 months from now, one set date is the only way to disentangle the dependencies and upgrade the whole ecosystem at once."

Then, Mozilla blocked all versions of Flash in Firefox after security researchers discovered vulnerabilities that affect various operating systems, that hadn't been patched.

Now, I'm confused. Are we at risk, now, if we continue using Flash?
I wanted to watch something, and I was blocked a few times but allowed it and nothing happened . . . I think.

So what is the alternative if there is something in Flash you want/need to see?

I'm also finding that some videos won't play w/Silverlight. Anyone know why?

Flash has been dying a slow death for ten years. Bugs are found daily everywhere. Java problems a while ago were worse than flash but it survived. Ban it or patch it. I don't worry about such things. I still use flash. Folks can decide themselves.

Here is some information from USA Today on dealing with lowering your exposure or removing flash.

Z

If you don’t want to give up Flash-required sites on your desktop or laptop, good news: You probably can’t uninstall Flash completely anyway. Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer both include their own versions of Flash that update automatically.

So you can uninstall Flash--in Windows, go to the Control Panel and select “Uninstall a program,” while Mac users must go through the runaround of downloading and running Adobe’s uninstaller--while keeping Flash around just in case.

(You can check to see if Flash is installed by visiting Adobe’s Flash version-test page in a browser besides Chrome or IE; if you see a missing plug-in error instead of a “Version Information” box listing your installed version, Adobe’s software is absent.)

How can you limit the risk of Flash zero-day vulnerabilities in Chrome or IE? You can set Flash to play only when you allow it on a page or at a site.

In Chrome, open your settings page, click “Show advanced settings...”, click “Content settings...”, scroll down to “Plugins” and click the button next to “Let me choose when to run plugin content.”

In IE, you have to go deeper. Click the gear-shaped Settings icon and select “Manage add-ons,” right-click “Shockwave Flash Object” in that dialog, select “More information” and then click the “Remove all sites” button.
