SiriusXM installed in new car

Post by REC on Mon Aug 31, 2015 1:05 pm

We have a brand new 2015 Toyota Highlander and would like to add SirisiXM to the factory installed radio. I know kits are available that are intended to seamlessly integrate with the existing radio and I could drive to the U.S. and have one of those kits installed there. I have a U.S. based XM account and know how to "add a radio" to that account. I also have a portable XM radio that I use in my other car but it is pretty clunky and not at all integrated into the existing radio - other than using the speakers.

So here are my questions:
- Has anyone had SiriusXM added to their Mexican built car? Where was that installation done?
- Does anyone no of a really solid auto stereo shop that might be able to do this - Lakeside or in Guadalajara?

Looking for a really professional and integrated installation? Thanks for any leads anyone can provide.

Doesn't your car come with pre-installed sat. Radio?

Only up North, Jreboll. We do not have that option, here in Mexico. Although it works just fine here, especially if you have a slightly larger antenna.

Jreboll - Thanks for the reply. No - my new car does not have Sat radio installed. Cars manufactured for sale in Mexico do not have that feature because Sirius does not offer accounts or programming in Mexico so they don't install that feature. I knew that when I bought the car.

I have found kits online that are available NOB that seamlessly integrate with factory radios - so it should be possible to get that kit and have it installed. It is looking likely that I will have to take the car NOB to get that done.

I have been told by a couple of people that the know someone who has had it done down here - but nobody has been able to give me any details - just 2nd/3rd hand information. I'll keep looking but sounds like I'll have to take the car NOB to make this work.

If you could get a kit shipped down here I am certain a skilled stereo installation shop could do the installation for you. I have seen some amazing sound systems at some of the local car shows.

I can definitely get this kit delivered here but not sure where to find a "skilled stereo installation shop". I did a Google search and found two that look promising in Guadalajara so may go talk to them. I am still hoping for a recommendation or information from someone who has actually done this but so far striking out.

Thanks to everyone that has responded.

The portable modules have the advantage of being able to be moved to another vehicle, house, or boombox. Car units are dedicated to car and only that car. You are home more than in a car and lots of good stuff beyond music is available including book reading and old radio programs. Price is the same.

Thanks Zed. I have the portable unit and a "docking station" for the house. I specifically want an integrated solution for the new car - in addition to the portable unit I already have.

I am not sure if this would work for you but being that your car is brand new, why not change out the radio. You can get one on EBay for 200-400 dlls and you get all the bells and whistles that go with it.

Changing out the radio is an option I have looked into a little bit but this is a unit with the large touch screen, integrated navigation, backup camera, etc. so the radio part is not separate.

Thanks - looks like a trip NOB is in my future. Can definitely get it done there but a long drive.

REC, I understand exactly what you are trying to achieve as I have both the inhouse and vehicle kinds. A couple of thoughts....

Surely there is a shop in Guadalajara that can add a unit (they may even has access to these kits themselves) as it is not rocket science. Since I was/am thinking of doing the same thing (to an older car that is not satellite ready) I have watched several youtube videos showing exactly how it is done. It is not THAT hard especially if someone has some knowledge of installing radios anyway.

One thing to be aware of... at your latitude the signals aren't as good/strong and the larger 'in-house' antenna (3"x3"), when used in a car also, will get much better reception than the small 1" kind normally used in a car NOB. Been there done that. With either size, expect to loose contact often when going under even the smallest obstruction... like a tree. Out in the open, except for when going under an overpass, the smaller one will work OK, but the larger home-version is always better. Always.

Good luck.

Thanks - and I agree. Should be able to find a shop in Guadalajara that can handle it. I've checked out a few videos and for an experienced shop it shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

Good thoughts on the antenna. We have the portable/house unit that we use in our old car and the little 1x1 antenna is "okay" but I've read about other options and will look into those options.

I am in the U.S. right now and am going to try to get by a good shop here to discuss the options. I probably won't drive the new car up here just to get the radio installed but might be able to get some advice/information while I am here that will help me get it taken care of back in Guadalajara.

Thanks again.

Go to the stereo shop in Chapala. If you take a right at the bus station, a right at the first corner, then a right at the next corner you are in front of a green or blue building that says Pioneer. See Mishal, he installed my unit. Very capable and speaks English
