The Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences will open an office in Chapala in the plaza.

Why should you care?

This office handles the issuance of police clearance letters. How do you know the person you are hiring to work in your home is not a criminal or just got out of jail? Many here have hearts bigger than their brains and will believe any sob story. Many large companies require their employees to get the clearance letter here called a Carta de no Antecedentes Penales. I had to get one to apply to the courts for a position and had to go to Zapopan. The cost is 50 pesos.

Every person should, before hiring someone to work in their home, require a written application, make a copy of the persons ID and a utility bill to show where they live and get this letter. While these steps do not guarantee a future free of problems it will help to weed out the bad apples up front.

Also many criminals deported from the US are coming to the area looking for work as they speak English from their time in the US. While there has been a recent trend to deport people for non criminal offenses, still the vast majority are deported for criminal offenses. People should be wary of those speaking English too well, there usually is no good reason a younger able bodied person would up and move to Mexico and work for very little after living in the US with minimum hourly wages there exceeding daily wages here. People will not tell you they were deported for robbery, drugs, etc. Be on your guard and understand the police clearance letters issued will not include any crimes committed outside Mexico.
