Driver Licenses in Chapala January 19, 2017

Remember that for foreigners instead of your IFE you will need to provide passport and immigration document, instructions say to go to City Hall General Secretary´s office on 2nd floor on the 17 to have all your documents checked.

This is a special day with a special mobile unit (they have these local days randomly and usually with little notice), foreigners will need:

1) Passport and copy

2) Immigration card and copy

3) Recent utility bill and copy

4) Know blood type

5) CURP printout

6) Payment of fees from recaudadora office, Chofer license new $630 pesos, renewal $558 , Regular auto license renewal $558 pesos, renewal $469 pesos.

Any other questions you can ask when they review your docs on the 17th

Are they also requiring a driving test for renewals?

Usually only eye test.

Spencer, are these renewals only?  Or can I get a new license? Thanks.

The answer is in several of the postings above, including the advertisement. It asks, “Do you need a driving license?“.

Does the utility bill (CFE) have to be in the person's name? Mine isn't.

The CFE bill just proves that your address actually exists. You can also get a comprobante de domicilio at the palacio municipal, which will also prove your address.

I recommend heading to Chiapas for a permanent driver´s license  that  will last  forever until you personally expire.  I have acquired Jalisco and Chiapas driver´s licenses over 16 years without any problems in either place and I no longer renew my Jalisco license which has  a normal expiration date of four years. In obtaining both Jalisco and Chiapas licenses, I have never been required to take a driver´s test and the written tests were farcically simple even though my Spanish is extremely limited.  The Chiapas license instructor told me he was giving me an extremely simple test because of my limited Spanish and I don't think I could have failed had I been deaf, dumb and blind.

Some Mexican states are reputed to issue licenses to anyone just motoring in front of the license bureau just as they used to say about getting a graduate degree from the University of Mississippi in the 1960s when it was reputed that they would throw a degree throug your car window  if you threw them a sawbuck.

That took me a minute, too. It's like a "Capcha" Code generated when you visit the site.

I went over there this morning, and there must have been 200 people in line. Will return later and see how it's progressing. At 9:30 they were still setting up.
