Who & How Long?
New to Lake Chapala and the people involved are retired volunteers who live here and want to help newbies transition into our community. We are educators not sales or marketing. Thank you for asking.

Do you have a website or Facebook page? I know a couple of people thinking about moving down but they would want to know more about Lake Chapala Resource Academy.

Re: Lakeside Living Orientation
Thanks Lady Otter for the offer but we are looking for new people who have recently moved here and would find value in participating in an orientation about the community. The orientation is presented by local expats with local living experiences.

Re: Lakeside Living Orientation
Who are the 'experts'? How long have they been here? Do they speak Spanish? Why does it feel so secretive? How much will you charge?
If you really want to do this to help newbies get orientated, do it right like all the other newcomer orientation programs do. Website, FB page, bios of the principals etc etc etc.
And, this isn't the best site to advertise for newbies, TOB would be better.

Not sure I'd hire him as my business manager either.
BTW - the reason I posted on this board instead of TOB, is because your board was my orientation and a prime source of knowledge when we first moved here. I thought it fitting to post the first notice here.
Thanks for all you and your experienced expats do to help new people integrate into our community.

Re: Lakeside Living Orientation
Just saying: There have been several "free" seminars in the past here for newbies. Nothing wrong with that, but since we are a fairly cynical group, it's good to know what the ultimate goal of offering such a service may be.
So?
I would recommend announcing it on Chapala.com since that seems to be the first stop for true newbies.

Re: Lakeside Living Orientation
Unfortunately most newbies reading the negative drivel over there are likely to pack up and leave or not come at all.........

Truer words never spoken......
Why would anyone direct anyone into the lair of mainecoons unless they have a real sadistic streak. It's the blind leading the blind, at best over there, and saying it's a "great place for newbies" is a sirens song to sail into the rocks, at worst.

Re: Lakeside Living Orientation
Well, while this is fun and even amusing...being someone very interested in exploring moving to Lakeside, and coming to visit for a month in September, I'd love to find places (without a lair of mainecoons) to gain objective insight into the thrills and pitfalls of Lakeside Living.
It's a difficult choice for all, but 26 years in the same house, a fabulous So. CA lifestyle, kids and friends in San Diego, and not speaking Spanish, make for some anxiousness involved in such a decision. We came in May to visit a friend, not seen for many years, who boasted "perfect year round" weather and almost died without any A/C in their casita. Coming from East San Diego, we're looking for cooler summers :) unlike the Canadians. On the other hand, the spirit of generous hearted volunteerism, both to the Mexican community and Expats in general is very fetching.
Anything happening in September that we wouldn't want to miss? I can bring cookies :)

Yes, there is the Regatta de Globos which is a tissues paper hot air balloon event. They range from 1 ft to 40 ft in size. Lots of fun. There is also a NASCAR event about 30 minutes away if you are into motor sports.

There is a lot of good info under all the different categories on here that would probably answer most of your questions. If not, ask away.

LOLOL. "perfect year around weather" is pure hyperbole. I spent my U.S. years all over CA, from L.A. to well north of San Francisco and places in between. Our thick walled casa here needs a good fireplace going in the evening for a few months from sometime late November through January. In the hotter months, like May, we have a mini-split A/C in the bedroom and fans going elsewhere. In general, it's a nice climate. You won't freeze or get heat stroke.
Spansh classes are everywhere and you can get started for free with Duolingo on the web.
Also, much of the stuff you read on the web is pure b.s........so come on down and experience the real thing.
Welcome and good luck!

Re: Lakeside Living Orientation
Everything is relative.......I don't have a fireplace or AC. This year we weren't cold even once however previous years we used our propane heater 2 or 3 times. As for AC, our ceiling fans do the job for us. This is like when people ask about the cost of living. Those from Butthole, Texas will tell you the COL is about the same with some things like gas, real estate and propane being more expensive here. Where I come from (Vancouver) there isn't anything more expensive here. We save about 60% overall. Real Estate is about 80% less. I had a woman stay with us from Nowhere, Florida and she did nothing but complain about the high RE prices and high rents here. I laughed and explained relativity to her.......

Best to experience things first hand. Beware of alterior motives.
Come and enjoy! Most of the fun is exploring and finding out how things work and where to find things :)

Wow! Thanks so much for these amazing replies. And yes, one of the things that I did love about Lakeside was the friendliness of the people who live there and your helpful attitude is a great example. My friend and husband were tireless and amazing in taking us all over everywhere and being the perfect hosts! The casita was lovely and we had such a good time that now we want to explore it further.
It is through friends like these that the "great people" find their way to your little corner of paradise. And yes, I was warned that May was hot...and indeed more than ever this year, I believe and well into June also. Meanwhile, here outside of San Diego (noted for its great climate) it's like frying eggs on the sidewalk weather, (over 100 F this weekend) and you guys are enjoying under 80s all week. Can't wait to get there again!
