UBER! Empty UBER!

Post by Trailrunner Wed Mar 25, 2015 8:43 am

I've been following the thread on TOB about UBER and I'm going to sign up. What a great way to trip around Guadalajara. Does anyone here have experience using UBER? I wonder if we can get a UBER driver to pick us up at the lake and transport to Guad or the Airport. . .

UBER would eliminate most of the drivers who have been serving us for years. I'm sticking with Carlos and the Miramontes.

I don't think those drivers would be in any danger from the competition. It's always good to have options.

From looking at the UBER site, it doesn't appear to come to Lakeside. There is a list of cities and Chapala/Ajijic is not listed. I put in "from Guadalajara Airport" to ...... Hospital" and it gave rates.

Oh, that's good enough, but how can they respond to the airport? I thought the taxista's union had that all locked up?

Not sure but if the UBER cars are not marked, it might be possible. Just like some of the drivers from Lakeside using their own cars are able to drop people off at the airport.

Since they aren't marked I would assume they wouldn't know. We are looking forward to figuring the UBER out in DF and GDL but have to buy a smart phone first. I have wanted one forever but we don't use a cell phone generally so it hasn't been a need yet.

We do use www.zipcar.com while up north and find it amazingly handy especially now that they are located a major airports and universities and you can drop those vehicles off in the city at various points. It is cheaper than a cab but not a rental. Most of the cities we visit have neighborhood parking restrictions so rentals aren't a good idea. Friends used Zipcar in Europe recently and said it was pretty easy and convenient.

I am just amazed by the concepts of both these new services. Who'd have thought there would be viable competition for taxi service.

According to Cristina, the cars are late model, drivers wear jackets and ties, and yes they are unmarked.
Wouldn't be hard to figure it out though.

UBER is awesome. Local taxis are lazy. In Guadalajara we use UBER alot and between them, City Drive and Cabify there is always availability. Commerce would grow lakeside with these services and the few taxis and private drivers arent available late and cannot serve the thousands of residents they even have UBER Eats where they bike or moto food to you from local restaurants. With the hot season we see regular cabs with the sweaty smelly drivers and 90+ degree heat and wonder why anybody would use a regular cab. Chapala needs better transportation 24 hours a day to grow, for tourists to get home and not be stranded, for residents to be able to get to doctor appointments and always have availability for their needs and not to schedule around the availability of the 5 to 6 private drivers commonly used. You know what the fare is before you get in, no gringo pricing. UBER is cheaper at times up to 1/3 of the cost from airport to Chapala compared to Taxis and private services and no planning ahead, just go to app and hire a car.

Last year I took Uber from GDL bus station to Sahuayo. It was cheaper than a taxi. The car was a new, unmarked Jetta. Last week I made an inquiry about Uber on Mexconnect. Shortly afterwards I was banned. I don't know the reason

You can get an UBER from GDL to Lakeside, but not the reverse.

The UBER estimate is about 1/3rd. of the cost of a car/driver from GDL to Chapala.

The only problem I have run into was at FLL. The pickup area is crowded and there are no front plates on Florida cars, so if there is no UBER logo on the front and a lot of cars there, you may miss the UBER and get dinged $5 when the driver leaves after 2 minutes. UBER needs to work on that issue.

Glad to see you are still on the planet, Pedro.

We never take taxis in the Ajijic área except in times of utmost necessity because they are unreasonably expensive. On the other hand. in our other town of residence, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, we never drive but always hail taxis which are abundant at all times of the day. Any destination in town - no meters ever -, $30 Pesos.

Well, I don´t dispute your assessment, but as we live in Ajijic and, at times need a taxi to Guadalajara or the airport although only rarely, we pay a negotiated price which is normally quite reasonable.  UBER is of yet on our chart  but maybe sometime in the future  when we can no longer see nor hear

Taxis here are unreasonably expensive! And as noted, do not operate at night, causing those without cars to be housebound. I can take a 45 minutes taxi tide in Morelia for 60 pesos. Here we get outrageous gringo pricing. We need some competition here!

This week I had to take my car to the shop in Riberas and they had no one to take me home to Ajijic....so they called a cab-or tried to. Dispatch told them to call Chapala, as there was too much traffic in Ajijic for them to come for me!

This thread originated in 2015 and was dug up instead of simply creating a new one. Pedro the person is still on the planet but Pedro the poster will not be found on this or the other board under that name.

Exactly. They don't even have to make an effort or work at night because they are so overpaid here. And this will never change until they get some competition. Bring on UBER!

Bring on UBER!

My experience with taxistas here at the lake is they are lazy and say they will be there when you call and don't show up. Not all the time, but it only takes once or twice to sour me on them. I no longer even bother with them. They are undependable.

Does UBER guarantee that their drivers are properly trained and carry sufficient insurance to transport "for hire"?

Well, just recently, a Europian woman resident in Merida flew from Europe into Cancun and took a bona fide licensed taxi planning to travel from Cancun to Merida and, in the interim, had the taxi driver stop at an ATM for her to withdraw some cash.  She was found murdered on the side of the road in a rural área near Valladolid.  The taxi driver was arrested and charged with her murder but I do not know the outcome of the investigation so am not presuming to know if he was the guilty party.  I am just familiar with this incident from reading the Mexican press.  This woman was a long time European esident of the Mexican Caribbean coast and not a naive newcomer. This tells me not to take a cab and have the cabbie take me to an ATM for cash before engaging that same  cabbie to take me down a rural, deserted road  on a long journey as happened then.  I happen to know the highway from Cancun to Merida and that is one lonely highway for the most part.

When one is in a foreign country or even one´s native country, cautious behavior is advisable.

On the other hand, in 1969, I was nearly shot dead just for glancing at the home of President Milton Obote in Kampala, Uganda.   Live and learn.
