Anthony Bourdains Mexico commentary

Post by CanuckBob on Sun Sep 24, 2017 7:34 am

If I could have a beer with just one person it would be Anthony Bourdain. I love this guy. His editorial about Mexico nailed it. He is not only an awesome chef but also a master of the commentary.

Yes, and probably worth watching that episode "under the volcano" which this was the opening commentary to.

I've been watching AB for all of his ten years on CNN. He seems to be the one guy who can tell the truth about all a country's warts without bringing out the haters the next day. Mexico has a long turn-around ahead of it, if it's not already too late.

They have been at it for over 500 years so what do you consider "too late"?

Ridiculous statement....Mexico will continue to be Mexico in it's own inimitable and unique way for another 500 years and either love it or leave it.  The culture here is so indelible that a "turn around" on a dime isn't even in the realm of possibility. There will be evolution, but not necessarily to an anglocentric end result that some from NOB seem to want.  Maybe a little around the edges for what "they" (Mexico) wants. The tail of a  handful of retirees in Central Mexico will not wag the dog of a population of 130 million plus people.

Thanks for the AB link, I will watch. I confess I liked him a lot when he first came out, along with Bobby Fley, read AB's book, and thought he was crass, alcoholic, drugged, or something and let him go. I will watch and see how he is now.

It's a written commentary not a video. AB is drunk and stoned out lots of times. Even on his show.

Beer

Being a vegetarian, did you appreciate his show about eating dog meat?  I'll bet not. lol!

He follows the local customs where ever he visits. If that means smoking the opium pipe or dining on dog, with the local chief, in a remote Asian village he will do it. That's what I love about him.

I did see that, it was a gagger.

Yeah, that's his shtick, reality food. Took him awhile to find his niche, not hard to see why.
I did love Kitchen Confidential! It was right on. There was another one I read too, but didn't like him or his work so much then.

Personally I think he is one of the coolest guys out there. I imagine his TV persona is exactly what he is like off camera. I would love to hang out with him.

Yes, I imagine that's who he is too. If you want to hang out with him/them, I don't think that would be a problem - long as you buy and pack all the appropriate noses. Just go where he is and hang out, he's pretty available.

His books are good reads as well. 45+ years in F&B and I can tell you he is spot on. LOL.
