I am sorry they did not mention the ATVs. In Chapala they are a worse menace than golf carts.

ATV riders are young Mexicans, golf cart riders are old foreigners. . . doubt they will crack down on ATVs. Tho I wish they would too, moto guys also.

Did anyone see a post on one of the FB pages of a woman getting hustled by a transito complete with multiple photos and name?

They are indeed cracking down. They even pulled me over in my modified vocho to check it out. The only thing they found was the color on the reg didn't match as I had painted it. They instructed me to get it changed or risk a fine the next time. I did so promptly the next day and the woman who processed it at the office had a good laugh and commented "pinched transitos"......... Jaja.

And so much for this snappy golf card being legal and where it is allowed.....It was on the carretera westbound around Riberas and Mirasol on Friday afternoon with a lineup of cars behind it.... He was hugging the concrete dividers but still no room to pass him with oncoming traffic and a solid yellow line.

How much traffic and congestion did it elevate when some one drives a cart as compared to a car? I might be looking at it differently but it looks like you could still get a plate as long as it met the requirements.

I think the problem may be most golf carts don't meet the requirements.

No they don't. I know some expats like to think of this place as a sleepy little retirement community in "Sunnydale Florida" but it isn't. Golf carts belong on the golf course or within the confines of a private gated community IMO. Just as the ATVs belong off road. There are plenty of micro car options for those who want something small and affordable. At least they are street legal and insurable. I used to shake my head when I saw that guy in the pimped out golf cart cruising down the caraterra in heavy traffic. Time for him to get a smart car I suppose....

I agree! Shocking there aren't more auto/ped deaths than there are.

I know that guy, doubt he'll change his mind willingly. There's usually a half mile of traffic behind him.

I have an ATV licensed and carry the registration w/me all the time. I love it and it's fun to drive.

One of the really great advantages of n ATM and scooter is that they park easily between two cars where a car couldn't.

The parking situation in Chapala is IMO, truly a disaster. I don't mind walking a distance, but I know there are some people who have mobility problems and can't do a walk from Soriana to the Plaza and back, or even a few blocks.

And the double parking is a real pain, especially when no one is in the car that is double parked; those IMO should be towed.

Here is the solution for the golf carters..........shorter, narrower, street legal and fully insurable.

Quite a difference in price between the two vehicles though. I'm not for golf carts on the roads either... they just don't go fast enough.

You can get a nice used smart car for 5K....... I know of people who spent twice that on a golf cart.

Thanks for the education CBob. I didn't know a used smart car could be so cheap and I didn't know that golf carts could be so expensive.

Still, a quad is easier to park.

BTW, what are the features that make it a "smart" car?

Do they have auto transmissions?

Well if you get pulled over and have your ATV impounded don't say you weren't warned. I'm quite sure the crackdown will include them.

It's "smart" to drive a street legal vehicle on a public road versus an ATV or otherwise.....

I don't know what they cost today. Mine was $14K list and I paid $12,200.

They handle topes just fine, never had a problem in 11 years!

Smart cars have all the latest technologies and handle topes without any concern, as they have 15“ wheels.  You may use the automatic shifting feature, or shift it yourself using the touchtronic system. They are amazingly survivable in crashes and surprisingly comfortable and speedy on long highway trips.  We drove ours from Chapala to North Carolina, and back. Yes, they can keep up with the high speed Interstate & Cuota traffic.  Beep beep..................>>>>>>>>> Mercedes/Smart dealership is in Guadalajara.
