Fall in the air/ Snowbird Mystery Empty Fall in the air/ Snowbird Mystery

Post by CHILLIN Fri Oct 06, 2017 11:23 am

Well the trees in the hills are starting to turn yellow. Yesterday, someone had a morning fireplace - don't know if it was to cook or chase off the morning chill. Soon the the trees and fields will turn dead and brown. There won't be any rain, there won't be any frost. Lakeside is very much different in the winter. This is why I just don't get "Snowbirds" - why on earth would they spend time here in the winter when they could be staying in moderate, warm climates on or near the beach November, December, January, February, March and usually April? The water temperature of the ocean can drop to 80F during this time, but it is still mighty enjoyable compared to 70F of the Lake and unheated pools at that time. Odd choice to me.

Believe it or not many people do not like the heat. In PV in December and January it can still be fairly hot. If you are coming from just about anywhere in Canada the winter climate here is paradise. Last winter was exceptional here. I don't recall the need to wear long pants or a jacket even once.

I hope this helps to solve your mystery........ Beer

As long as they don't have to shovel snow and the temperature is above freezing, it's perfect.
Budgetwise, it's a whole lot cheaper to rent here for the winter than at the beach so you can stay longer.

We came here from Vancouver (one of the mildest climates in Canada) for 5 years in a row before moving here FT and always thought the weather was just perfect. After living here for almost 6 years we do find some winters (Dec/Jan) to be a bit chilly. We go to the coast for 4 weeks now.

Coming from coastal CA, we're used to a mild climate and nosnow.  I prefer a cool climate and don't enjoy the hot period.  We went to the beach at a PV Thanksgiving tour and it was waaay too hot for us.  January is just right there, and that's about it.  Everybody's different.
Also, as CBOB pointed out, it's less expensive here than at the beach, but from what I've heard, rents are going up and availability is way down.

PV is experiencing the same boom as here. I heard this phenomenon was happening in all the expat enclaves in Latin America. Panama, Ecuador Costa Rica, etc. It's not just Ajijic and Mexico......

You can tell winter is coming. Snowbirds are showing up and prices are going up. Happens every fall.

Want to start a pool on when the first Canadian snowbirds arrive? Black knee length socks, sandals and shorts. A picture will suffice as proof. Canadian plate gets double points.

Much cheaper to rent in Mazatlan Ferret. It is greg climate in Nov., Dec, Jan, Feb, March and April. If someone is a beach type person, check it out, about 1/2 price of PV and a greg centro Hitorico and then a great Golden Zone area, two different aspects of the city.

Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc. The great "baby boomer" migration is underway. I also think for the Americans it has little to do with the government.

IMHO, the influx has little to do with politics and everything to do with economics. If you happen to be living in a near-the-beach dwelling within commuting range of Silicon Valley and can sell the dump for over half a mil, invest half of it in a nice casa hereabouts and put the other half in your bank account, what do you suppose intelligent people will do?
Expect Californication, ready or not.

Half a mil???? You haven't been back in a while. Its probably over 1 mil now. All my friends in Vancouver are millionaires now if they sold their houses.

Many on this next wave have lots o cash.

Al Gore said that in 2017 we would all be dead because of global warming. Air is colder for sure and ocean temps are lower. But he made a lot of money off of us !!!!!!!!!!!

That often happens. Go and hug one... it's probably just as effective as actually getting the flu shot.

I agree with the OP! When we were raising the kids, we took about 6 one-week vacations to Mazatlan in the Winter or Spring. So much fun! And there is A/C, with a jump in a pool or the ocean.

However, if you're retired and want to hang out here for six months, Central Mexico makes sense and is probably cheaper than the coast?
