Interjet vs Volaris Empty Interjet vs Volaris

Post by desafinada Wed Dec 06, 2017 3:36 pm

I am looking for feedback from anyone with experience with both of these airlines. I have flown Volaris a lot but am getting more and more disgusted with them. Is Interjet any better or are they all birds of the same feather?

I have flown both domestically with no problems. They seem the same to me.

VivaAerobus is also about the same. I think that Volaris has the most confusing pricing schemes of the bunch though.

What were the problems, David? I take it they were significant.

Big delay out of GDL, messy, over-crowded waiting area in T2. No food or drink available there.

Yuk. Sounds really unpleasant. Air travel is bad enough even when there are not delays, messes, crowded waiting areas and food and drink are available.

Interjet vs Volaris Empty Re: Interjet vs Volaris

Having flown the three airlines in question, I prefer Interjet. Similar pricing to the others but without many of the add-on costs. Two checked bags included. Volaris seems to try to push these extra charges. One small carry-on included and no checked bags. You want to pick a seat?

Please, Volaris and others -- don't make travel even more unpleasant by weighing and measuring my carry-on bag while I'm waiting to board. With Volaris, I find that by the time I add the costs of the extras, I am at about the same cost as a real airline... I really miss Mexicana.

I've flown Interjet quite a lot the past year & absolutely prefer it over Volaris.  Volaris charges gringos for the tourist visa as an 'extra' & Interjet does not.  Also regarding luggage, Interjet has never tried to weigh my carry-on as Volaris ALWAYS does.  All mex airlines now charge for international checked luggage, glory days are over..  I find the Interjet website clear & easy to use, there's a 15% discount for 65+ & older.  Internet sales are good too. Just know that a sale ticket will not also be discounted for senior status - one or the other. Phone reps for Interjet speak english &helpful with changes, fee of $35 will change date, itinerary & name transfers even. So, yeah - try that with Volaris :( I flew Aeromexico over thanksgiving, immigration @MEX a breeze, got decent last minute fare & free luggage (Delta sky miles member). Also Delta points. I think Aero wants Delta crossover biz.  Only problem is their older fleet with really small bins for carry-on.

Volaris seating very cramped and they give you nothing. You must pay for everything on board.

Interjet vs Volaris Empty Volaris and "Tourist Visa"

We speak Spanish here.  We asked Volaris customer service about the tourist visa charge pointing out that we were residente permenante.  They advised that we should state on our online reservation that we were "Mexico citizens."  They acknowledged that their web site did not have a way to handle our status and pointed us to this work around.  No mention was made of updating their web site.  Don't know about the legality of doing this, but do know that claiming Mexican citizenship does avoid the tourist visa charge.

We travel to European and Asian destinations a couple of times a year.  LAX is the most convenient and inexpensive jumping off point.  For us, Volaris has become the last resort travel option to LAX.   Poor service, surly customer interaction, gotcha pricing, unannounced schedule changes and poorly maintained cabins pretty much define our experience with Volaris for the past couple of years.  We look elsewhere and will pay a premium to avoid them.

This is what I would call a good review on this subject. Given these comments one could assume their maintenance, equipment repair, and mechanical attention would be penny-pinching and lacking as well. That would be enough of a bad recommendation for me to choose another carrier. ymmv

Agree with TR.
#1 son came down on Volaris LAX to GDL.  He was told at check in his carry on was acceptable.  At the gate they told him no - he had to either go back and check it (and miss the flight) or pay a fee.
He coughed up $700pesos.

Interjet vs Volaris Empty Re: Interjet vs Volaris

Post by coffeeguy Fri Dec 08, 2017 4:59 pm

A good thread and my limited experience has been the same: Interjet whenever possible, Viva Aerobus OK for short domestic hops but do figure in all of the charges for extras. Volaris's pricing is eccentric (e.g. you get 2 small personal items but no normal-sized carry-on) and often punitive, they change schedules without notice and the seat configuration and padding is ONLY endurable for short domestic hops or maybe a non-stop to a U.S. point of entry. We made the mistake of taking their red-eye from Seattle to GDL and it was awful.

Not mentioned here but also well worth considering for the domestic routes they fly is Aeroliineas TAR. The entire fleet is composed of the small regional Embraer jets so you need to either check your bag or have a compressible carry-on (our 22 x 14 x 9 Ospreys fit fine but roll-aboards generally won't). Excellent service both on the plane and via phone in both Spanish and English, very professional, very competitive fares and they are often the only non-stop (e.g. to Oaxaca) from Guad. Limited routes but well worth looking at.

Most airline reservations require passport information, so if you put Mexican citizen and you put in a U.S. passport number, how does that work?
