Opened recently next to the Casa de Waffle (East side). La Vid has a nice selection of wines, cheeses, and meets. Fresh baguettes too! Open til 8PM weekdays, 2PM on weekends.

I do, but never to the Casa de Waffle. No one mentioned it on here before AFAIK. I hope they succeed.

Rolling Eyes Why in the world would you assume that people who do not know about a new business in West Ajijic don’t get out much? West Ajijic is not the center of the universe.

Funny, I never go to the Waffle house so I did not know about it either.. I guess I should go out more in Ajijic.. like going to the cleaners and get chairs redone or even have breakjast at the Waffle House...Odd place for a wine store..

It's tucked in pretty tight. Unless you approach from the East you'll not see it.

Points west of SAT are not in my usual area of travel. I try to avoid gringolandia as much as possible (mucho mas personas y ruidoso), however friends mentioned going there back in early September and said it had a rather nice deli selection. Also there are vibradores in that vicinity so people usually slow down, gawk and notice new businesses. Since it is the former location of City Sandwich, new ventures are usually noticed and commented on shortly after opening.

Another reverse snob.  "gringolandia" prejudice is the same as any other:  a state of closed mind, based on ???
Worse yet, it's just plain silly, like little kids calling each other names.

Wide Sky, you are a hoot. I live in Chapala. I very seldom even go to Ajijic. I am curious as to why you would consider west Ajijic “gringolandia” but not Ajijic? I can not begin to explain to you how silly that is. Thanks for my morning chuckle.

jajajaja

Ajijic people get so defensive when their pueblo is referred to as gringolandia.

Here is a little exercise in orientation to the area. Go to Ajijic plaza and sit for an afternoon and observe the people. It's fun, actually! Now go to Chapala and sit in the plaza for an afternoon. Now go to San Antonio plaza for an afternoon. And, finally, go to the Joco plaza for an afternoon of people watching. Point made.

PS: Thanks for the tip on the wine shop, though, I will search it out next time I'm passing through the area.

The term "gringolandia" is offensive because of what it implies, and I needn't explain that further to anyone who's lived in this area more than a year.  It shouldn't surprise anyone that offensive terms produce responses.

The only time I see who's on the Ajijic Plaza is when I'm having lunch at the Jardin restaurant.  Most of the passing crowd are tourists gazing about rather aimlessly, as visitors do.  On the weekends, it's mobbed with Tapatios.

If the "point" is that there are more Mexicans in the other plazas, then "point made".  However, who has the time or inclination to spend afternoons sitting around plazas people watching?

Don't despair non-Ajijicians.....We are doing our very best to direct all newcomers to SAT and points beyond. We tell them it is less expensive and has more authentic Mexican cuisine and atmosphere. So far so good......

Thanks for your good work, Bob. A real public service for our fellow Ajijicans. Keep it up!

Shortly after arriving in Chapala ten years ago I heard a local dentist refer to 'gringolandia'. I thought she was referring to a theme park similar to Tobolandia except with free admission!

Okay, what does the term imply to you? I think the offensiveness may, like beauty, be in the eye (or ear) of the beholder (belistener). To me, it means town or village with a large number of foreigners, enough foreigners to influence the life of the town or village. I have heard the entire north shore of Lake Chapala referred to as gringolandia.

Honestly Gringal, I do not know what the term implies to you, and I would like to know. You are not the only one offended by it. I wonder if everyone has the same reason for being offended. Is it the word itself you find offensive or whatever meaning you have attached to it? To me, it means “land of gringos” as in “there sure is a lot of foreigners here” — which there are. How is that offensive?

We all live in "Gringolandia", no matter which part of the North Shore we're in, right?  This discussion is about a gourmet shop somewhere in Gringolandia, which runs from Chapala to Jocotepec.  There are no snobs, let alone reverse snobs, since we're such tolerant and accepting people.

gringolandia is used in a pejorative way by people here who are more Mexican than the Mexicans and love to throw a little Spanish here and there as they write in English to prove the point.. I find it offensive as well but anyone who has to use vibradores or think gringolandia es ruidoso is a joke anyways so why worry about it ?

Well if all the Chapalatites, Riberasians, San Antonioese, etc. stayed away from Ajijic then there wouldn't be so many here. If only we could get the LCS to relocate to points east.......
