22 hours ago ... In 2018, banks in Mexico will face new regulations that will oblige them to collect biometric data (finger prints and iris scans) on all of their customers. Whenever a customer asks for a new home or car loan, cashes in a paycheck, applies for a credit card or opens a new savings account, the bank in question , "etc.

How do you like this one?
Should provide new work for hackers.

LOL. The manager from my CI Banco office came by to take pictures of our home for his tile. All I have there is a savings account.

The financial institutions with which I deal all have the exterior photographs of our houses taken from tax records. CI Banco tried to enter my house about three years ago to take interior pictures. I refused them entry on security grounds and withdrew my application for an account. It is potentially dangerous and rather suspect that this bank alone would want pictures of valuables, of possible ingress/egress and of other aspects of our houses that are none of their business.

I'll say!! I can't imagine anyone complying with that! I'd bury my money in a flower pot before I let these banks in my house or give them any information.

I, and other family members of the household, have accounts at CIBanco, HSBC, Multiva, Banamex, Intercam, and also Santander, I believe.........
But none of us has seen or heard of any of the above described issues.
Is this something associated with new accounts?....foreigners?.....or what?
I guess we are going to have to start talking to management personnel and I will report back anything we learn.  So far, no visits from bank detectives. LOL

More info..
The request is part of the Mérida Initiative, a security cooperation agreement signed in June 2008 between the United States and the government of Mexico and the countries of Central America. In 2015, the U.S. and Mexican governments approved the $75 million program to help Mexico “develop an automated, interagency biometrics system to help agencies collect, store, and share information on criminals and migrants,” according to a Congressional Research Service report from earlier this year.

The initiative aims to combat the threats of drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and money laundering.

Foreign-owned subsidiaries of global banks like BBVA and Citi are thrilled with the initiative arguing that it will help them combat identity theft. Most high street lenders in Mexico have already agreed to help build a single biometric database, says Marcos Martínez, president of Mexico’s Banking Association (ABM).

The ultimate goal is to develop a unique identification system that will work alongside the government’s national ID scheme, which is in the final stages of development. According to the former Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (and now presidential candidate for the governing PRI party), José Antonio Meade, by the summer of 2018 all Mexicans will have a single biometric identification number.

These developments are moving fast and quietly. And as is the case with biometric programs being tried and tested all over the world right now, from the uncharted backwaters of long-forgotten war zones to the bustling metropolises of the West or East, no one is being consulted along the way.

Your iris can change or finger prints change, actually due to accidents or diseases, yes they can. So I guess it will be an ongoing redo like your drivers license renewal..

And another thing all security can be hacked eventually.. Ex.

Your biometric information is going to be stored digitally and linked to your other personal identifiers: name, ssn, etc.
How difficult would it be for a hacker to delete your biometrics and substitute their own? Voila! You are no longer you.

gringal.....talked to 3 banks including a top executive at Multiva, and no one has heard of any requirement for what you say the article says about biometric data,
Doesn't mean it won't happen but it's not in the pipe line yet, or even knowledge about it being mandatorily implemented, by at least some people who should know, in this area.

Quote from Wolf street journal see above li is

What sets the biometrics program in Mexico apart from what is happening in most other countries is that it is the country’s financial regulators and private banks — and not the government — that are requiring this, though the government is not far behind

All of this done not for the safety and convenience of of the customer but for the bank’s self protection. You have to wonder what they’re afraid of. Maybe they are printing so much money and they have to keep track of it somehow. They are the ones doing the money laundering.

This is just one more chip in the block of personal privacy. I'm wondering when "chip" inserts in newborns will be the new normal? These intrusions are happening at an increasing rate, thanks to the Machine Gods. However, hacking will become a fine art, too.

My fingerprints do not show up when using the latest computer scan system. I recently applied for a security license in TX and the government could not get my fingerprints. Finally, they let it go and gave me the license, but I am glad they cannot track me. BTW, I have read that women who cook actually burn off their fingerprints by touching hot pans. Not sure if this is true, but I have baked all my adult life and grown immune to touching hot cookware. But, if you haven't, I suggest taking up the hobby of baking to burn off your fingerprints. That is my security tip for the day.

Oh my. this is troubling.

People have tried using non-existent addresses in applying to open bank accounts (of any type), that is why there has to be a physical check if you are not known to the bank officer.
That's the regulation now at certain banks.
