Hotel Real de Chapala at 9:00 AM

TELMEX bigwigs will tell us all the good things they have planned for fiber here at Lakeside. I have some land for sales in Florida if anyone is interested.

I suspect ilox has woken the Bastards up.

I stopped going to these eventos, all they do is tell you what they think you want to hear and escape out the door as soon as they can. Nothing they say has ever actually materialized in my experience. Waste of time. ESP, since we're talking about TelMex! Maybe if Carlos himself was coming.....

Fortunately another federally licensed carrier, Ilox,  has  offered to provide quality fiber-to-the-home Internet, TV, and phone service if we can get 200 prepaid signups deposited into the bank, As of yesterday, we were at 461 signups.  Invitations have gone out to the pledges, contracts are being signed, and the build out should start soon.

If you haven't pledged yet and still want to, here are the   FAQ:  https://goo.gl/CsE574   Pledge:  goo.gl/2kHdeE

Here are the links to the Ilox invitations:

NOTIFICACION ILOX TELECOM ESPAÑOL - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UE_FTt3ZKKSZDiGgwKF8tEr_Xk-zQZnn/view?usp=sharing

NOTIFICATION ILOX TELECOM ENGLISH - https://drive.google.com/file/d/10hCzrdkWxMSTh1jrgNHonhRFxYIV6p4f/view?usp=sharing

The 200 equivalent prepaid contract represent but a fraction of investment to build out the network.  To make that investment, Ilox wants to see enough interest in the community to have some skin in the game.  They've turned up fiber service elsewhere where the purchasing power wasn't what they thought.  Most small communities in Mexico are not like Ajijic.  Can you blame Ilox for taking that position..?

If you don't want to pledge now and assuming we get past the 200 equivalent paid-in sign ups, Ilox will open an office and you can contract then.  However service won't start until all the prepaids install.  Probably looking at the end of year.  The prepaids are guaranteed to install no later than 6 mo after payment, maybe much sooner because they'll execute in one fell swoop.

If you prepay you will receive a guarantee agreement that will refund your monies paid immediately, (max 30 days) if the project doesn't go ahead (due to insufficient paid signups,  too many inaccessable installations (like in gated communities with underground ducts controlled by Telmex).  Ilox and their activities are fully registered at Profeco.  They are are federally licensed carrier.

If you own property,  are a developer, or work at lakeside, what part of not having high speed internet available that is holding back economic development in the area do you not understand?

I'll reiterate I have no financial, business, or any pecuniary interest ties to Ilox whatsover.  Just an interested expat at lakeside who owns property and would like to have offsites from my GDL office with my employees.

One would think that some of the bigger businesses around here like Walmart and Autozone would be willing to lay down some cash too...

Both  Walmart and the new hospital in SAT have laid down big money for TelMex fiber to be delivered later this year.

They could use that to leverage fiber elsewhere at Lakeside.

Guess we'll hear tomorrow. To bad I can't be there.

Has anyone on this board sent in the minimum 7100p (~) prepayment for i-lox? I am one of the 461 sign-ups, but while I read 'guarantee' I also know I am in Mexico & once money is handed over here.. sorry, it is never seen again. So guess I am still a newbie, not such a brave soul..

Hey Caligirl,

No one has paid yet.  The individualized contracts will start going out in a few more days.
Nearly half of the signups have already responded to the invitations and requested their contracts.  I will certainly pay mine immediately.

Ilox is a federally licensed carrier that mainly provides business grade Internet service.  Trust me, they are not going to risk their federal concession over a few hundred deposits in Ajijic.  Their contracts are registered at Profeco.   All of us at lakeside need to understand our good fortune that this carrier decided to route the return segment of  their fiber backbone ring around the south side of Lake Chapala.  This will allow, for a few million pesos, a buildout to Lakeside.

Ilox 5 year capital investment plan was  focused on growing their network from central Mexico towards Mexico City, targeting the more lucrative business accounts.   Lakeside wasn't in their plans.  They didn't understand the purchasing power here.   They did turn up Zamora, which isn't a very interesting residential market, but allowed them to pick up some good industrial accounts there and salvage the investment.

When we approached Ilox management, they said the only way they'd do another Zamora like investment is if a minimal number of residents showed enough interest.  That number is roughly the monetary equivalent of 200 Triple 50 plans, more or less if the other plans are chosen.   That is just a fraction of the investment.

Fortunately, we've exceeded the signups by a wide margin.  Your choices now are to prepay and be a part of the one fell swoop buildout; service should turn up in about  6 mo...or wait until they open their office, probably in March, install all the prepaids, then migrate in the others.  Realistically, that'll probably be closer to the end of the year.

Thank you for signing up and I hope you continue!

Tom

@Tkessler, I too signed up, and received the recent e-mail indicating they are ready to let the prepaid contracts. However, I hesitated for one reason. The e-mail indicated that if you are in a condominio with your utilities underground, it was up to your condominio to determine how (and pay for) the link up to the main cable. The earlier e-mails indicated ILOX was going to contact the condominios. I can't sign the contract until I figure out if my condominio can support it.

tkessler2, for those of us 'wait and see' types, if this system does get in place and is functioning securely will we be able to subscribe then? If so, about what will the monthly cost be?

I am so over TelMex and their arrogant indifference to infrastructure and providing good service I can hardly wait to see how this turns out.

@NoVaDamer:
The worst that will happen if you sign and prepay, and the access problems can't be worked out, is they'll refund your money. Ilox has a national agreement with CFE to use their poles. Telmex, however, is sneaky. Unless a gated community has been smart about maintaining control of their underground ducts, Telmex will offer to install them, and then controls them. Ilox cannot use a shared underground duct . The MX government has tried for some time to change the legislation and it hasn't gone anywhere. So welcome to the nightmare. If you are in one of these developments, now is your chance to get together with your HOA and figure out how to fix it. In Los Sabinos, they are thinking they can route along the walls. Usually where there's a will there's a way.

@Trailrunner:
As soon as roughly 200 contracts prepay, Ilox will open an office in Ajijic and start accepting regular monthly signups. But those customers will have to wait until all the prepaids install, probably the end of the year. You can see Ilox service offerings here: https://www.ilox.mx/iloxhogar/index.php/paquetes . You can get the Doble 50 package for $599 pesos/month. That will give you 75 mbps down/ 18.75 up the first year. Because its GPON fiber, no comparison in terms of reliability and quality.

Just looking at the application and getting ready to sign. I'm confused about the plan differences.

Do all plans include a ported phone line and some sort of video feed as indicated in their earlier communication?

What is the "voice and data 50" plan? Is it the same as the others save for the lower bandwidth?

TIA

SunFan

PS TelMex really blew it yesterday with a no show at their hastily called meeting

Hi SunFan,

The double 50 includes a Chapala phone line and Internet service. The Triple 50 adds the TV channels. If you don't get the TV package, you can still get TV channels by subscribing to an IPTV like USTVNOW or Nitro TV. You just need to hook up a Roku or Android TV box.

Yes...Mexico implemented number portability a long time ago...Probably they'll install with a new number and then you move over the old one.

Great packages. After 6 years of max 1.6 mbps, frequent freezes, inaction and lies from TelMex I would do anything to get away from them.

I assume this new company will have to string new lines from Jocotepec to Chapala and every side street in between. That seems like a vast undertaking to get done by the end of the year.

I guess it all depends upon where you live. I live close to the Telmex office and the telephone wires up the streets to where I live were replaced maybe 8 years ago. I have very reliable service from Telmex. I get

Others in some parts of Chapala get twice that speed. I guess it all depends upon how close you live to your DSLAM card and how new the wiring is.

Sure I would love faster speeds. And of course Telmex will increase there speeds should competition come along and threaten their dominance

Our Frac has been battling with TelMex for several years to improve services. When our Board escalated to TelMex Head Office we got an offer of a repeater (at our expense) or wait for a tap into fiber they're brining in for two commercial customers.
