Short Term Marriages

"MEXICO CITY — Mexico City lawmakers want to help newlyweds avoid the hassle of divorce by giving them an easy exit strategy: temporary marriage licenses.

Leftists in the city's assembly — who have already riled conservatives by legalizing gay marriage — proposed a reform to the civil code this week that would allow couples to decide on the length of their commitment, opting out of a lifetime.

The minimum marriage contract would be for two years and could be renewed if the couple stays happy. The contracts would include provisions on how children and property would be handled if the couple splits.......................................................

Wouldn't it be easier just to live together for a trial period before actually getting married? By the end of two years, anyone will have figured out that the other person squeezes the toothpaste incorrectly or hangs the toilet paper incorrectly ;)

We have the same thing in France it is called pax not sure about the spelling.
It is a contract that can be disolved just any other contract and prevents the hasles of a regular divorce.
It was passed to help couple of the same sex get the same rights but it became a big hit with young hetero couples.
If you have a trial marriage you can run into legal problems with property, The pax spells everything out, it is official but can be dsolved easily, a great improvement over the length and costly divorces.

Good points. The one good thing about the "2 year contract marriage" it that it settles some legal issues up front. Still...........????

Great idea, if only we'd had that back in 1968 when I married the first pinche Mr. Raqueteer.

I also think it is a great idea, many people get married and quickly find out it will not work so this way, you just split, all the nitty gritty nasty details have been worked out before every one gets uptight and nasty.
Just let the contract run out and that is it...a whole lot cheaper too.

I wonder what kind of ring a short-term rental should wear? Something from the crackerjack box? Anyway, it would have been great for my first marriage, but I don't think she would have signed the contract.

My nephew is getting "paxed" next week and I can tell you the jewelers will not get rich on this one, neither will the special envents organizers, wedding dress people ad so on...On the other hand they just finished a beautiful house so maybe the priorities are changing.
Not sure what his contract will read or the terms of the termination, I will have to find out.

I really do think it's a great idea. Unfortunately, for every contract that is signed and agreed to, there seems to be a smart ass lawyer who is able to undo it...for their share of course.

Bear in mind that they haven't passed this into law as yet.

Exactly my thinking while the ceremony was going on. First marriages are always a mistake.

Not necessarily, of course. I have friends who got it right the first time and are still smiling many many decades later.

On the other hand, there's those who discover they have a major point of disagreement: one of them thinks he or she is God. Problem there.

Hmm, tried to post this before. First marriages are called starter marriages for a reason. Plus I got to the what was I thinking part on my honeymoon.

France is not the US and lawyers do not fight every contract ever written and I believe Mexico would be the same way. Thank God.

The good thing about a first marriage is that ,hopefully, you find out exactly what you really want and need in a partner...partner being the operative word for me.

Ya know... it wouldn't surprise me if the option of a short-term marriage contract resulted in longer lasting and more stable marriages in the long run. ILizzy

The creation of temporary marriages sounds more like political posturing than a serious effort, in a country that already has “Union Libres.” If a couple registers with The Federal Government after living together for two years, some rights of inheritance are granted.

If they register again after five years, the union becomes permanent. There is more to it than that, so I suggest some research be done.

One of our neighbors is married to an Army General. She told my late Mexicana wife that they started living together and having children before they were married. My wife said that lots of people do it that way here.
