First time FM3 question

Post by Carry Bean on Tue May 18, 2010 11:57 am

I read somewhere that you have to apply for an FM3 within 30 days of arriving here. Is that true or not?

If you marked FM3 on your FMM ... I hear that is correct. If you marked Tourist and want to change within the 180 days like we used to ... I don't know what they would say

Yes. Also you must tell the immigration agent at the border/airport that you plan to get an FM3. He will mark that on your FMM; then you will have 30 days to apply at the INM office in the town where you will be living.

Here is a picture of an FMM. Note the second section from the bottom.

I think now that the 30 day rule only applies to people from countries where a prior entry visa is required so a Colombian would need a visa and have to apply for his FM3 within 30 days but an American or Canadian would not.

Well, I marked mine as "Usual Residence - Abroad" so I'm guessing I do NOT have to do this within 30 days???

The section under "Official Use" has nothing checked at all anwhere. I just would prefer to do this next month so I should be OK, right?

My take on it is that if you begin the FM# process at a MX consulate abroad, you will be issued a visa. You will then have to enter MX and present the visa. You will complete an FMM and be given 30 days to complete the FM# process within MX since FM# can only be issued in country. If you are in MX on a 180 tourist FMM, you can complete the entire process at the INM office closest to your MX residence. Here is the verbatim wording straight from the INM website and my translation of same:

Toda vez que cuentas con una legal estancia en el país acreditado mediante una forma migratoria la cual se encuentra vigente el trámite correspondiente es el cambio de tu característica migratoria.

Este trámite lo podrás realizar en la oficina del INM cercana a tu lugar de residencia.

Whenever you are legally in the country (MX) accredited by a valid migration form (like a tourist FMM), the appropriate action is to change your migration status.

This action can be accomplished at the INM office closest to your residence.
