Drag Races in Guadalajara

Just got back from a great day with my kids and 3 Buddies, Mike, Bob and Trevor from the drag races in Guadalajara.

Lots of fast cars. Some slow cars. Some top fuel rail cars. Some bonitas chicas. Some hombres borachos. And Mucha gente.

Give us some detail, types of cars, age, speed etc. Do they have this often?

Autodromo Guadalajara has a FaceBook page. It looks like they post their events there. I don't see anything other than yesterdays event so far. They also have a road race track on the same site.

It also looks like they have Friday & Saturday night events where you can take your street car out there.

Here is the track layout. The light gray strip at the bottom is where they run the 1/4 mile.

They also run one leg of the LATAM Challenge series on the road track. I am sure there are many other events as well.

There was an article in one of the Guadalajara newspapers a couple of weeks back about the track portion. In the past, there have been some sort of NASCAR sanctioned races on this track. However, they had to cancel them for this year at this location and move them to Monterrey because of a deteriorating track surface and safety barriers. When the article was written, it was unknown if the money was available to bring this facility back up to acceptable standards.

They also have a track a few miles over in Cajatitlan that they use for Mexican NASCAR events. I went to look at that track a few weeks ago but because my Spanish sucks I couldn't get the groundskeeper to let me in.

Yes, I have heard that the surface was in bad repair. That is why I wanted to look at it. I have some friends from NOB that would like to set-up a supercart school here and I wanted to see if the track was suitable and if the facility could be leased. It doesn't look like it has been used in at least a year or so......

Perhaps I will talk with the Autodromo Guadalajara people.

Great pictures, CB. Brings back a lot of memories of going to the "drags" in Phoenix with my brother.

Next time you will have to join us MC. The more the merrier and now we know the quick way to get there and what to bring to fully enjoy the day.

The only 'rail' there? Was that an average turnout or smaller than usual

Grudge matches are what we called the street car racing in Fremont Calif back in the '60's

There were about 6 or 7 rails, 4 or so funny cars, 2 Jetsters and lots of highly modified, tubbed out street rods. In the video you can see that the yellow funny car the rail was supposed to run against crapped out on it's way to the start line so the rail went alone. All the cars did time runs first then they were staged against each other with their perspective handicaps applied. Makes for great racing when a street rod goes up against a funny car. The street rod gets about a 5 second head start then they launch the funny car........yahoooooo.
