Warning, to go to the waterfall it is a big walk like to 2 to 3 miles each way so be prepared, we got tired but going back is always easier check out the zip lines.

We went to Mazamitla today. It is considered to be the "Switzerland of Mexico". It is a very cool Bavarian style town up in the mountains south of the lake. It reminded me of Leavenworth, Washington or Kimberly, BC. We really enjoyed it. We went for lunch at a nice seafood restaurant called El Charco. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get there. The drive through the mountains was easy and beautiful. Great views of the Lake.

We took another trip to Mazatmitla today to show some friends. All the roadwork is done within the town and the place looks great. It was a bit busy being Easter and all however the drive was no problemo. We had lunch at Vito's which is right across from the plaza. Being Easter we thought we better have the "Conejo a la Cerveza"........jajaja.

Mazamitla is nice,we usually stay in some cabañas near La Manzanilla de La Paz,the "Ruta Ecoturistica de la Sierra del Tigre" is a nice drive thru the muontains with lots of good picnic spots.

Took a trip to Tapalpa today. It is a very nice, clean town. It is very much like Mazamitla, perhaps a bit larger, and has a nice lake (Presa El Nogales) a few kilometers south. There appears to be a lot of activities in the area (fishing, paragliding, zip lines, atv's, etc.). I plan on returning for a 3 day weekend.

First time to Tapalpa? I like it too, but I've never been to the lake. Is it big? Clean enough to swim? How do you get there?

Some time when you go again, check out Ferreria de Tula on the high road into Tapalpa. They have an amazing water supply system, the road to the village from the highway is filled with wildflowers this time of year. Also, along that highway, and not far from Ferreria de Tula turnoff, is a lamb bbq place that is awesome but only open on weekends. If you go via the libre up to Tapalpa, stop in Amacueca and pick up some coffee from the first tienda on the right. There is a small interesting and well maintained museum up by the centro that contains a full skeletal mastodon that they pulled out of the dry lake beds. They also grow nuts in Amacueca and their rompepe de nuez is delish.

We could see the lake from the high ground but when we tried to get to it my stupid Garmin kept getting us lost so we gave up and went back to Talpalpa. The tourist office drew us a map for the next time.

Oh, that's a good idea, I'll stop at the tourist office next time. There is an awesome bakery a few doors up and across the street from the tourist office btw. Cool town, lots of outdoor activities. Weekends are insane, though.

Next time I think I would rather be there on the insane weekend than the dead weekday. As you can see from the pictures the place was a ghost town and many things were closed.

The last time we were in Mazamitla we were on the plaza a little before noon and there was a tour group organizing for a trip to the sites in the area. We bought tickets - 120pesos each - for what turned out to be a great tour to a park with the hanging bridge and waterfalls, a lake and dam visit, blackberry farm and onsite wine/juice/jam factory, visit to a wood fired bakery. The tours are sold on the side of the plaza next to the cathedral. Also, we stayed at a very nice hotel just up from the plaza with fireplaces in every room and beautiful grounds, Huerta Real. Los Trojes for lunch or dinner is the best place to eat, in our opinion. I would like to stay in one of the cabanasa in the bosque next time. Anyone have experience staying in one of those?

I'd like to know about cabanas in Mazamitla, too. I called a few in the middle of last month when I thought the heat and smoke was gonna put me under and either got a disconnected number or didn't get a call back. I'm thinking next year it would be great to have a cabin up there for a couple of weeks during May.
