JOHN'S LIST OF AJIJIC AREA RESTAURANTS UPDATED

Post by joec on Sat Dec 08, 2012 9:26 am

This has been UPDATED due to Restaurant name change and quality of one restaurant has been downgraded. This is good for newbies or those vacationing here. I am not a food critic and many of you may disagree. This may help newbies or those coming for a few weeks. Our Bi Monthly Dinner groups favorites are asterisked. I don't expect everyone here to agree as everyone's taste is different. Some restaurants are not listed because we (our Dinner Group) have not eaten at them. All Restaurants are in Ajijic unless otherwise noted.

Just wonder what got La Bodega four stars. I haven't heard a good word about La Bodega's food for years.

Never had a good dinner there but once we had a very good lunch, although it was over-priced, IMO

DON PEDRO Restaurant is no longer "One of the 12 Best Restaurants in Ajijic". They are having money and food supply problems.

For "great" Filet Mignons, steaks, BBQ Ribs and fish go to BRUNO'S, and IMHO, better than Tango anyday.

SIMPLY THAI Restaurant should be changed to Excellent and move up the list. They're doing a great job.

List is badly out of date. I counted 8 closures or relocations that I know of.

I guess that john will have to revise his income spreadsheets to accommodate the reduced commissions for touting certain restaurants?

The obvious closures are 60´s in Paradise, Hole in One and The Secret Garden. On relocations, you need new addresses and phone numbers to make the list useful. No one person has them all. Maybe people who frequent relocated restaurants can make a point of getting new addresses and phone numbers, send them to you and you make the change? I do not use the lists but assume there are newcomers and visitors who do.

WHY does this place merit a single star???

Post by JaboneraNatural on Tue Jul 25, 2017 5:48 pm

SIMPLY THAI Restaurant
-----------------------

A friend & I went to the new location on Zaragoza today at 2pm.

I must say, I am thoroughly confounded by the good reviews of this restaurant.

Now, I lived 2 years in Thailand in the Isaan, Chomtawan village, on the border with Cambodia. Suffice it to say, I not only know & appreciate Thai food, but am quite an accomplished Thai cook myself.

There is not one thing THAI about this place. The supposedly Thai owner was absent, employees were Mexican & did not understand Thai or Lao names of dishes, only numbers on menu.  Being fluent in Spanish, I ordered stir-fried veggies with pork (pad pak mu), but received a plate of greasy, limp carrots, zucchini & onions - with a texture as if they had been boiled. No pork. Not one Thai veggie present, like yard-long beans, cabbage or bok choy, straw mushroom or oyster mushroom, nor even a tomato - nada. Bland as jarred baby food - nasty, basically. There was no papaya salad (sum tom) or sticky rice or old fish to be found. And no chilis to be had, either.

Re ambiance, all the decor is from Indonesia or Cambodia (cheap & cheaper) and the music is not Thai, either. I reckon they count on the ignorance of their customers to stay in business.

We were the only people in the place at 2pm, so stress or customer pressure was not an issue.

Even the Thai coffee was not even Thai. My friend ordered Lemongrass tea, which was not lemongrass tea. Service was not good, bordering on resentful. No water was brought, even though it was requested.

I had been looking forward to visiting this restaurant for over 6 months... But after a disgusting plate of flaccid, uneatable non-Thai vegetables, accompanied by surly attention & a menu filled with everything NOT Thai, it was a huge disappointment.

Good Thai food is famous for the combinations of flavors - sweet, sour, bitter, salty; as well as the combination of textures - crunchy, soft, nutty, etc.  Sublime pairings of fruits, chilis & lime juice...  Very Happy

Well, you will not find that type of food in this place.

I most certainly will not return - especially to be charged over $200mx for a lunch that was cooked in toxic Aceite Crystal (belly ache began after the 4th bite) instead of normal Thai or Mexican coconut oil (or even plain old LARD or TALLOW).  (BTW - 2 hours later, I am still in belly pain, but still hungry, having no proteins yet today.  I will have to wait for the allergic attack to pass before I can eat again, probably tomorrow.)

The owner may be of Thai origin, but he does an extraordinarily poor job of representing Thai dishes on his menu or the traditional ingredients or manner of cooking.  It is laziness, as there are huge quantities of local vegetables that are common to Thai dishes.  Absence of any basil, lemongrass, or ginger was surprising, as well.  No turmeric, no nothing, really.  The only way to call it Thai food is if it is the Owner himself eating it.  Pretty gross stuff.

On the plus side (the ONLY 3 positives), there is ample street parking (with shade), the restroom was clean, and there are nice plants in the decor.  Very fancy menus with nothing Thai in them, bound with very nice water hyacinth paper made by the Hmong people.

Regarding pricing, maybe average for the area. But ridiculously expensive for the mierda they serve there. I would have gladly paid $1,000mx for a well-prepared Thai meal, but this was just disgusting.

For me, one of the more expensive & THE most disappointing dining experience I have had in Mexico, period!

There is a better Thai restaurant about a block from there. I can't remember the name. I'm sure someone else on here will know and post. Give them a shot.

But don't expect to be thrilled. Went once with a group.  Not bad, but not up to the standard of the original owners and cooks at the Simply Thai.
