Why is there a different list for tourists and newbies? Two questions: 1) why is El Jardin de Ninette on both lists when you are questioning what the current status is? & 2) how come Roberto's is missing from the tourist/newbies list?

Another correction: Armando's is now closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Their featured dessert is an excellent bread pudding soaked in brandy. Sinful.

Thanks, I'm sure they need some time off after becoming one of the few busiest restaurants in Ajijic and well deserved.

DON PEDRO Restaurant is no longer "One of the 12 Best Restaurants in Ajijic". They are having money and food supply problems.

For "great" Filet Mignons, steaks, BBQ Ribs and fish go to BRUNO'S, and IMHO, better than Tango anyday.

SIMPLY THAI Restaurant should be added as below.
SIMPLY THAI ****----------------------THAI-----------------------EXC $ 90 - $ 140
Ramon Corona # 11---------------Appetizers & Soups
(across from LCS)---------------Many Thai Menu Items
766 5665--------------------Lunch Specials - $ 90 pesos
----------------------------------Closed Thursday

-------------------------One of Ajijic's 10 Best Restaurants

No. I am not as dedicated to the public as John was. Maybe we could start a thread where people could post the changes they know of and one of the moderators could make the edits?

I think the updated list (incorporating openings and closings and adding in a few places that are well-regarded but not on John's list) would look someting like this:

Ajijic Tango
El Jardin de Ninette
Bruno’s
Manix
Ricki’s Thai
Tony’s
Panino
La Taverna
Pizzeria Toscana
Roberto’s
Tabarka
Gossip’s
Number Four

In keeping with John's tradition, no Mexican places and no place East of San Antonio listed (since folks from Los Arroyos Sur risk acquiring a taste for chile and/or and irrepressible desire to learn a few words of Spanish should they mistakenly venture beyond safe range....) Very Happy

You forgot Yves´.
So who wants to put the work into bringing this list up to date? Or, is it time to retire John´s list? Is anyone even using the lists? Without updates it is misleading for visitors, new residents or people who do not get out a lot.

Yeah, you're right about Yves.

John's list is so limited that I don't think it's really worth updating. The bigger question in my mind is the fate of John Keeling's Restaurant Guide, which is far more comprehensive and useful but which appears to have seen its last edition in 2012.

Precisely because the ONLY type of food there's any press for locally is gringo-oriented cuisine I've offered a local food blog for some years now (http://eatinglocalatlakeside.blogspot.mx) which I need to put some energy into updating.

Perhaps someone (or a small group of folks) who dine out regularly at the kinds of places John liked could set up a web site, or (with the moderator's blessing) a sticky on Inside Lakeside? Given the regular closures, moves, etc. it would take some maintenance, but I'm sure would be appreciated.

The first restaurant on your list, Ajijic Tango, is definitely a Mexican restaurant, albeit estilo argentino.
Mexican owned and the largest pct. of revenue generated by "Mexican clientile".
This type of restaurant is popular all over Mexico, not just in the "gringo areas". Lots of them in Guadalajara.

Tango is without a doubt very popular with Mexicans, but it's not a Mexican restaurant: it's an Argentian steakhouse, albeit with quite a few untraditional offerings (e.g. pizzas, pastas and the like). Of course one could argue that places like this (as well as Tony's, etc.) that specialize in steaks and chops offer food with links to Spain and are Mexican in that sense, and you'd get no argument from me. But the heart of Mexican food are the pre-Hispanic cuisines based on corn, beans and chile, and for those one must go elsewhere (El Zapote, street food, etc.).

El Jardin de Ninette is arguably more authentically Mexican, since it offers the kind of thoughtful fusion cuisine (with plenty of Mexican ingredients) popular in places like DF and Morelia.

John´s lists have a lot of useful information even though he was self-limiting. I´d like to see his two lists made into one and am willing to edit it. It looks like it was a copy and paste from Word. I love your Eating Local blog and think it would be very useful to newcomers and visitors as well as people who have been here a while.

If you want a real study in inaccurate info on Ajijic restaurants, TripAdvisor provides some great reading material:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g499405-Ajijic.html

With respect to Ajijic Tango (the #1 rated restaurant) being a Mexican restaurant, it is fun to read the reviews written in Spanish. It seems that they either rate it the best or mediocre without much in between. Based on our last visit, I would rate it middle of the road at the very best?

While I don't think Tango is the best it is very consistent and reasonably priced. You always know what to expect there. I had some really good ribs at Tony's today. Definitely the best ribs around here for sure IMO.

I think that would be a real service to the community Lady Otter Latté - more power to you! And thanks for the kind words about my food blog, which I realize is very incomplete and needs some work.

I agree with you Neil about TripAdvisor, but nature abhors a vacuum and I can tell you that the ratings there, however dubious the sources, can mean life or death to restaurants. The number of tourists who plan a visit to a place who know of TripAdvisor, Yelp, Chow, etc. is huge, whereas the number that find their way to forums like this is tiny.

My impression CanuckBob is that Tony's and José's in Chapala are always at the top for ribs, and I know many who go to Tony's on Sundays for the lamb and chamorro. As for Tango, they simply have it down: consistent food, professional service, pleasant atmosphere, excellent bar and well-chosen, fairly-priced wine list, on and on. It's far from being the best Argentinian restaurant I've eaten at, but it is unquestionably the most successful restaurant at Lakeside - and we are very luck to have it.

Jose's in Chapala has the best ribs around, best price and huge portions.
Thanks Lady OL for editing the list.
Toscano Pizza is deep in the heart of Riberas! I am surprised it made John's list. They must have taken an entourage LOL.

Kevin:

Although I have to admit to posting numerous restaurant reviews on TripAdvisor, I hear what you are saying! Since restaurants in Central Mexico draw far less activity than say those in the high tourist areas, I try to do my part to draw attention to these restaurants. I attempt to refrain from being a "restaurant critic" and try to provide photos of the facilities and the food while pointing out the restaurant's reputation for ambiance and service. After all, who am I to assume that I am qualified to suggest that I know what other people will like?

As for the forums on TripAdvisor, they are often full of shoddy info by self proclaimed experts. I recently made an inquiry on the Santa Fe, NM forum searching for a rumored excellent liquor store that was supposed to have over 500 types of tequila. One suggestion made by a Santa Fe Destination Expert (who happens to live in New York City) was that I might be able to find out more if I was to take a tequila class being offered in Santa Fe. I researched his provided link and found that the class introduced one to one brand of Mezcal and three brands of Tequila for a mere $40 for a 30 minute class! While on the topic of TripAdvisor Destination Experts, the is one designated for Chapala, Ajijic, Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta and most of her reviews and forum posts are about Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta even though she lives at Lake Chapala.
