Renewing US Passports / how far in advance of expiration??

Does anyone know how far in advance of expiration of a US passport that you can apply for a renewal? And, how long does it take to get the new passport?

I did get an answer on another forum. I can renew passport any time before it expires.

The consulate comes to the American Legion and then to LCS on the same day which is the first Wednesday of each month. I'm told they will do the pictures and help with completing the form (if not already completed on-line and downloaded), I surrender my passport and they will return the new one the following month on Wednesday.

If I need the passport sooner, then it's necessary to go to the consulate in Guadalajara, making an appointment first.

The fee has gone up to $135 US.

It is best to renew at least 7 months before expiration figuring one month to get it done and also the fact that many countries might not let you enter if you don't have 6 months left before expiration.
