Renter rights

Post by KenD on Sun Feb 17, 2013 8:43 am

Are there any ? Ran into a situation where we have a signed lease for 6 months with an option for another six months rental if we want. Have had 2 other Rental agents phone and say they had the rental as well , and in fact one was very insistent that even though we told him we had a contract for 6 months that he wanted to show ppl the home as they were interested in renting for 1 year. He said he had contacted the owner and she said it was ok. We had the owner contacted and she said she had told him it was not ok . We phoned the real estate office in Ajijic and told the listing agent ( its for sale too ) that we didn't want the supposed agent showing up as he only gave us 2 hours notice and the owner did not ok it , he showed up anyways with clients in tow. After a bit of a heated discussion where he repeatedly asked to see the contract ( which we finally showed him ) he then changed his story to " the clients were actually looking to buy " Just wondering what if any are renters rights and should we bother complaining to any agency that oversee's realtors ?

Any input is appreciated we are new to the Mexican ways :)
Regards
Ken

Look it up on ChapalaMLS and see if it for sale. You can put in the Agencies name. That will show what they have for sale. If it's not for sale and you get another jerk like this, don't show the house. BTW, sometimes when a house is for sale, they only give about 2 hours notice.

I'm sure you have renters rights, but Spencer (Intercasa) should weigh in on this.

So you have a signed contract, who signed it, did the owner sign it? If you have a contract you should be fine although it will cost some $$$ to assert your rights if an issue arises as it always does.

Or cut your losses and move. There are plenty of good rentals around that might not be as messy as the one you have. And this time, don't use an agency.

Rental contract is signed by us ( renters), owner of the home , and another rental agency ( which had the listing as well ) The house looks like it was listed with several different agencies, the 1 we use has been extremely good to us. We have contacted the Realtor Agency and will see what comes of it. Any Lawyer referrals or available rentals in Vista De Lago we would appreciate. Still loving it here :)

Remember...a compromised settlement between contending parties is usually better than a litigated judicial victory....financially, physical and mental wear and tear, time factor, etc., etc., etc.

This is the land of..."no one wins"...legal litigation. Except, of course, the legal professionals.
Just sayin...and also, of course, YMMV.
