Copies of auto import papers? Empty Copies of auto import papers?

Post by ComputerGuy Mon Feb 18, 2013 8:34 am

A transito informed the me the other day it's not a good idea to keep the original paper from your import sticker in the car (loss, theft, etc). He said a photocopy is perfectly acceptable, since the sticker itself has the same numbers. He insisted a notarized copy is not necessary. This is the first I've ever heard of this.

Spencer said in another post that it must be a Notarized Copy by a Mexican Notary.

What is the difference between a plain copy and one that has been notarized? The amount you have to pay to notarize! I doubt any transito would refuse to accept a notarized copy but some may question a copy that han't been. For the minor amount that it costs to notarize, wouldn't it be smarter to err on the safe side?

Many transitos were towing people who did not have an original or notarized copy. A notarized copy is accepted as the original and 50 pesos is a small price to pay for a copy of an irreplaceable document in case something happens to the original.

Last week my golf partner was stopped for turning onto the Libramiento after the turn arrow went off. The Transito was going to have my friends car towed because he had only a xerox of his TIP document. I (and $400 Pesos) talked him out of it by promising to get a certified copy on our return from the golf course.
Kinda like Art. 106, even though the law is clear you'd better have a letter from Aduana certifying that your TIP is valid thru the expiration date of your No-Inmigrante or Residente Temporal.
