So to let you all know, today we were informed that immigration has changed their policy and will now only allow people who get the preauthorization at the consulate for resident temporal to swap that for a card good for one year. Previously you could choose from one to four years. I couldn't believe it and checked the written instructions we had and compared them with INM web site and yes they changed their policy / stance and if you have a temporal from the Mexican consulate then you can only get a temporal card here for one year.

That doesn't help me as I don't understand any of the INM stuff.

I got a new card in November BEFORE the rules changed. I went from FM 3 to FM 2 (old designation). My card is good for one year. Does what you posted affect me?

The post only applies to people applying for the first time at the consulate in their home country.

Does this mean you have to go back to your consulate in U.S. or Canada after one year to restart the process or you can stay and purchase another year or get permanent status? Thank you
