Surface mode, or cylinder mode?

When it comes to computers, I am older than dirt Beer

My first job was as a computer operator on IBM 1401's and the new 360 30 series at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Toronto. Worked all 3 shifts. Those were fun days in the late 60's.

I think the 2311 was before my time. But I do remember the first winchester drive for IBM small computers.
Wow removable packs. Remember all those beautiful made chain or row printers for those old computers?
I had one IBM sorting machine with wire up boards that I hated LOL. Was the 1401 the machine with the
wire up boards? Before I went to HP I always worked on the IBM sys 3 little RPG machines. Never worked
on the bigger IBM stuff. Always wanted to but at the time getting hired by HP was like going to the moon
and I learned to love the HP3000 and the HP RTE 1000 machines before going over and becoming a Telecom
engineer. Good Times and good money!

The 1401/70/90 series had transisters but actually used magnetic core (iron donuts) for it's memory. Base model had 8K .... yes that's 8,192 memory.

Used to make and deliver punch cards and a lot of companies kept data on reel-to-reel tapes. Seem to also remember a large flip-top drive

My first computer was a PDP-11/23. Came with RL02 disk drives--10MB removable packs, about 15" in diameter. Cost about $25,000 ca. 1980.

My dad gave me his Radio Shack Color Computer in 1982 when he bought an IBM PC. A year later I bought a Heathkit PC clone kit and built it. Processor was an 8086 and 64k of memory without an expansion board. Needed two floppies because MS Word took all of one 360 disk (text only)

Eventually got a 286 with two 20 meg HD's and ran a Fidonet BBS for 4-5 years. Didn't work in the industry until early 90's

I was an oerator and later a programmer on a 1401 for the Toronto Star.

Those were good times Beer
