Post by MiamiSteve on Sat May 11, 2013 1:06 pm

Hi -

Recent arrival in Chapala, looking for a good urologist, especially with expertise in spinal cord injury patients. Lakeside or Guad.

Thank you.

The best Urologist I know is in Guadalajara. His name is Dr. Luis Mora Ibanez. His telephone number is 333-813-3028. He speaks pretty good English.

The new Integrity Medical Clinic in that new 'strip mall' by the car wash has been able to attract some first class specialists to come out from Guadalajara. At least one day a week. To see a regular doctor 300 pesos. To see a specialist 600 pesos. The reason that they came to mind is that they have good parking and wheelchair ramps if you appreciate those.

I am not familiar with that clinic nor did he tell me that he came to Ajijic when I used his services in January. I visited his office in Guadalajara. The best bet would be to call him and see if he does still come out here.

I work with a great Urologist based out of Hospital Del Carmen in Guad. He is UP TO DATE by U.S. standards and as a matter of fact, he just got back from a Urological Conference in San Diego last week. Oh, and he speaks English that is up to MY PROFESSIONAL standards.
PM or email me at CHAPALAMED@gmail.com for more information.

I have recommend only the best specialists by my professional standards.

Good luck in your search.

Follow-up post

Thanks for the recommendation. Dr. Mora is great.

I called on a Monday morning, told them I was sick, and they gave me an appointment Tuesday afternoon.

We started in Spanish then switched to English, which he speaks not expertly but without any problems. Dr. Mora is a very thoughtful man - he listened to everything I said and answered all my questions. He's very intelligent (as most docs are) and reassuring. He was aware of all the issues that quadriplegics face. Dr. Mora spent an hour with me, wrote a couple prescriptions, ordered a test (clinic across the street) and gave me some samples I could take immediately for my fever. The charge was MX 600 or $50 US. He also recommended a new treatment [PM me if you want details].

Parking is available in a lot behind the building (a large and modern medical center) for reasonable rates. As you drive past the building (which is on the left) you come to a "T" intersection, take 2 left turns and enter the lot. There was plenty of empty space.

In context, I had been seeing a "regular" urologist (referred by my GP) in Miami and when I became dissatisfied with him (in a panic because of my pending move to Mexico) I went for a second opinion to a urologist associated with the University of Miami, which is known for their work with paralysis. The regular urologist had been charging me $160 US for a 6 minute appointment, he had no time for my questions, was not aware of a new treatment I had been researching, and was actually hostile to hearing about anything from me I had gotten "from the internet". At the U of M the doctor spent 45 minutes with me, as a new patient, and answered all my questions -- but the charge was $450 US. !! He was also unaware of the new treatment I had been researching but at least accepted an article on it I handed him. (No mention by him on the next visit whether he had actually read it -- to busy for small talk.)

The new treatment -- super-oxidized water, sold a Mycrocyn in Mexico and Puracyn (formerly Microcin) in the US. Both the doctors in the US had never heard of it, but it was one of the first things recommended to me by Dr. Mora. It's been working for me and without it I would probably be in trouble. It seems ironic that I'd have to go south of the border to get cutting-edge treatment, but in this case that's what happened.

So yes, I'm very satisfied with Dr. Mora. I'm continuing to see him and would recommend him. Thanks for the help here from the other posters, because I was pretty sick when I asked for help and got it right away.

Dr Mora's office address in Guadalajara is Calle Tarascos 2469, Suite 513. This is in the NW of the city. Calle Tarascos runs east-west (well, it's one way, running west) a couple blocks north of Av. Mexico and a couple blocks south of Av. Manuel Acuna, which also go east-west. The north-south street is Av. Aztecas aka Av Homero.

Your GPS will probably get you there by the Diagonal Golfo de Cortez, which intersects Calle Tarascos; it's a little tricky, but because it's a diagonal it's easy to see on a map.

It's about 20 blocks west of Av. de las Americas, or 5 km west of Av. Colon/Calzado Federalismo (15 minutes).
