Green Parrots

Post by CanuckBob on Sun May 19, 2013 8:07 am

I had heard that sometimes you will see parrots in this area. This morning we had two large bright green parrots high up in our African Violet tree. They were about the size of a crow and had some yellow and red around their eyes. They were eating the seed pods and dropping the husks to the ground.

African violet tree??? How about African tulip or galeana. The parrots you describe are around here. There was a palm tree on our street with holes from the woodpeckers and these parrots had a nest in one of the holes.

Tulip? Yeah probably. It's African something or other. Big red flowers and large seed pods. Never the less it is the first time I have seen these parrots around here.

There is a pair of Amazon yellow heads in the area too, I've seen them on the lake in SAT. Put out some sunflower seeds and mangos and maybe they'll feed on them.

You may never have seen them before but they breed in this area. Not sure if they are escapees or if they are indigenous but there are around if you have trees with holes in them at a very high level you may have some of them. We have two extremely large galeanas in the garden and we have never seen any but there was a nest of them in an old palm tree and one of the gardner took the babies out when the tree fell down. The little green parrots with yellow heads can be seen in many places in Mexico.

Unfortunately, these parrots are on the endangered species list.....all parrots are, and it is a federal offense if you get caught with one, yeah they sell them on sides of the road. I was at the GDL market on Sunday 6 years ago, Semarnat and Profepa rolled in with guns drawn, everyone scattered and they took possession of Owls, hawks, boas, parrots.

You are right Jim, all the native species are protected by the Federal laws, unfortunately it is not well enforced and enforced in strange ways sometimes. It is illegals to have toucans, Guacamayas, the little green parrots with yellow on their heads, howls etc.. The confiscated a lot of the birds from Geoffroy at the shelter and took them to the zoo when these birds had been around for a long time and were well treated but they rarely do anything to the tianguis sellers in Guadalajara.. It is a real shame.

Bravo! Wish it was better enforced too.

Once I saw a pair of Guacamayas cruising along the cerro at duskl from upper Ajijic.

Could have been my neighbors, she has 3 pairs of Guacamayas and one day the gardner was not paying attention as he was feeding them and 2 escaped, fortunately it was not a pair and they came back to get their mate saw the food in the cage and walked right bak in. They were gone for a couple of days and the gardner knew he had no job if they did not come back but they did.
These birds are wonderful and they mate for life, If one dies they never get another mate, this is why it is so important to protect them. There is a wonderful reserve in Chiapas called los Cuacamayas and the birds can be seen flying freely, they are just beautiful and they fly so high.

Are there permits available to have a captive bred toucan?

No, the species is considered endangered. You might be able to search and find a licensed breeder. If you don't have the CITES paperwork the government can confiscate, impose a fine and or imprison you.

When I was volunteering the Wildlife Group, I was required to carry the legal documents allowing me to possess my Moluccan Cockatoo proving she was hatched in captivity.

I will contact friends @ Semarnat and let you know what they say.

I do not believe so. Talk to Geoffrey at the shelter , he just got a whole bunch of birds taken away from him, parrots toucan red flamingos and others, some of them he had for 15 years..
We have toucans in the jungle in Chiapas so I doubt that you can get permit for them but who knows you have to call and find out.

A while ago we found a pigmy owl in the garden that could not fly , we put im in a cage and call the wild like people in Guadalajara to ask what to do with him or her.. They first told me it was illegal to have any wild life animal in captivity and only Laurie and werner could have them so they told me to talk to them , then they told me to bring the bird over to Guadalajra, then they told me it was illegal for me to transport the bird. Laurie told me to call Guadalajara so I shut up ask the vet to check the bird and tell me how to feed him we fed him until he could fly and then opened the door.

What got interesting is that after the tiny owl got on a branch a zillion tiny birds I had never seen before including the colibris swarmed him to make him go away , it was fascinating. The little owl was way up on the tree and all the tiny birds were after him. he flew away and once in a while we hear an owl in the tree but I do not know if it is the same one.
