High quality dog food available?

Post by mwool on Wed May 22, 2013 10:10 am

I would like to know what brands of "good" dog foods are available Lakeside.
I'm sure that there are plenty of "big" names but we are looking for the better stuff.
Any ideas? Thank you.

I use Eukanuba for my dog and Royal Canin Renal LP for my cat. I believe these to be "good"

Check out the Animal Shelter in Riberas and the various pet stores affiliated with vets. You might also want to compare the content of the Kirkland dog food -- someone reviewed the content a year or so ago and deemed the quality to match the "good" brands. The review may have been on TOB.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, Kirkland's is considered a good one and reasonably priced.
Hopefully there are others.
Since we are not there yet, I was hoping to find out what was available before we got there.

Several higher end dog foods can be found here, but not consistently. We finally switched to Kirkland because the large bags of the higher end adult and maintenance and specialized dog food were so often missing from the shelves everywhere and our gang did not take well to frequent changes in brand.

Our girl eats Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Dog Food. Dr. Memo on Constitution places an order for us on a Monday and it's here on Wednesday to be picked up. We always place the order with about a couple of weeks worth left...just in case.
It would be easier for us to give you the info that you require if you would let us know what you're looking for and in what size.

I use Science Diet for my puppies but it is quite expensive ($90 CDN for 13.6KGs). I will probably switch to the Kirkland brand once they are a year old.

Good to know. I was hoping for some other high quality brands like Blue Buffalo, Inova Prime or Taste of the Wild but a consistant supply is so important. I don't want to be changing our dog's diet around either.

We have a mini-Schnauzer with skin issues so the Kirkland Signature Small Dog Formula from Costco could work, if available there. It is rated pretty high without any know allergic reactions. Smaller bags would be better for us but being a Costco, maybe not available. We'll see.......

The skin issue is exactly why our girl is on the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic...and it is available in smaller bags.
There was a time when she had no hair on her legs or tummy and lots of ulceration. The hypoallergenic dog food was/is a miracle. Went for a whole year with the vet thinking it was some kind of parasite...NOT!!
Check out Royal Canin's website for ingredients...and virgin coconut oil is helpful too...both externally on the hot spots and internally. She has had no skin problems for over seven years now.
I doubt you will find the other brands that you mentioned here in Mexico.

My allergic dog can't eat the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic but does fine on the Kirkland Lamb & Rice. The Diamond formulation is different and he can't tolerate it.

We don't have any of the premium dog foods available. At least not yet. And we really miss Avoderm.

To avoid large bags of dry dog food turning rancid, we transfer to gallon ziplocs and store what is not currently needed in our freezer.

I highly recommend that you go to this website. www.dogfoodadvisor.com

You will be amazed at the poor quality dog foods that are available out there.

I prefer The Dog Food Project - they seem more even handed and it is easier to see what and how they are evaluating. There articles on what ingredients to avoid and how to choose a dog food are invaluable.

I could only identify a couple brands available here. Shocked at how low Diamond and Pedigree are rated.

Just got a three month old puppy and want to start him out well. . .what about homemade? Anybody got a good recipe?

Read about Hill's Prescription Diet for puppies or any of their other dog foods.

We fed our puppy the raw food diet based on a recommendation of a breeder. Eight years later she's still eating raw. Raw chicken necks and backs, ground chicken or lamb. Put lots of veggies (brocolli, carrots) in the food processor and mixed it in with ground chicken. Lots of recipes on the internet for the raw food diet. It's more work but worth it.
