Processed foods are THE major addition to the diet causing a rise in obesity and other related health problems here and elsewhere. IMO.

A lot...there was no such thing as bottled water in small containers to carry to the job or for travelling, so many people drank refrescos when not at home when they were not sure about the water.CanuckBob wrote:What portion of the Mexican population could afford Coca Cola twenty+ years ago?
They knew the refrescos didn't contain "animalitos".
About 40 years ago I was on the old highway between Durango and Mazatlán...stopped at roadside puesto where they sold refrescos (no luz, no plumbing) and asked the little kid for a Coca.
He said..."Señor, ¿le gusta Coca? I said...sí. He said "¿Do they have Cocas in the Estados Unidos?"
Naturally, it was "al tiempo"....no hielo (ice)
HEY!! Maybe we couldn't always afford potable water and ice, but we could always afford a refresco.

Mexico has been the leading per capita consumer of soft drinks for decades. Many of the older brands no longer exist. But there are still local brands such as Jarritos, Pato Pacual, Sidral Aga, Sidral Mundet (now belongs to Coca-Cola).
And when talking about Coca, you have to mention the infamous and traditional "desayuno del albañil", which is none other than a coke with a raw egg added. Sabrosisimo!!!

Unlike the Irish, who maintain a sentimental lifestyle, brought on by liberal doses of drink...slainte39 wrote:Neil...what the heck is a sedimentary life style?
Lack of physical activity is one thing, settling to the bottom of the ocean is another...when it comes to obesity.
(maybe obese people sink faster)

Re: Leading cardiologist says Mexican food is the world's most deadly
One big change, that started about 15 years ago was that fresh fruit and produce appeared to get much better. The produce sections of the larger tiendas and larger grocery stores were dreadful. A sorry looking pile which consumers picked through. If you wanted good, you had to go the tianguis and followed the different seasonal crops, which sold out very quickly. I think it was Costco that changed all that, their system of shipping fruit and expediting produce from all over the world. Then the large grocery stores followed. The trouble is that this quality of produce is not what it appears. Without even getting into the pesticide and environmental debate - these fruits and produce are bred strictly for appearance and shelf life. Most of the produce on display today is a bland, woody, impersonation of the original. People have lost their taste buds.CanuckBob wrote:But that probably hasn't changed in hundreds of years. I think the point is that something has changed recently (say the last 15+ years). No?

There's an old joke in Peru...
When the "explorers? discovered?" Machu Picchu in the early 1900's, and as they approaced the city, the first thing they saw was a Coca Cola sign.

Sugar - the bitter truth
The original article makes a blanket statement about Mexican food which is an unfortunate over-simplification. Traditional Mexican food might not be the healthiest, but the modern food industry must take most of the blame. This is a long video, at times a bit complicated, but it convinced me what the real culprit was in the global obesity epidemic.
