The local chippie, or chip-shop, or as most non-Brits know it, the local fish-and-chip shop was once a staple of life in Britain and a must-visit after the pub ( because, after all, you don't want to go to bed on an empty stomach full of beer). I've just found a great local chippie in Ajijic. It's on Guadalupe Victoria, between Aldama and Encarnacion Rosa (basically somewhere behind Farmacia Guadalajara). It reminds me of my Yorkshire fish and chips. So I am hoping it stays around.

In some places "chippie" means young hot girl. In California it means CHP, the California Highway Patrol. To each his own slang.

He has to substitute talapia for cod, but what the heck, the batter is good. About the only game in town.

The best battered deep fried fish I have found so far is next to the libramiento car wash. Fish is great but, as is the norm around here, the substitute fries for ships. If the place has chips I may give it a try.

Fries, ships, chips???....you lost me.    scratch

Lake Taco does give you a choice between mahi mahi and I believe the "infamous" basa.

English "chips" = "fries" (ie. french fried potatoes). NA chips = English "crisps". The English have some awesome crisp flavours. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, you're right...same in Ireland. It was the "ships" that got me confused. Very Happy  Probably a typo.

I have been eating fish and chips regularly since I was a wee bairn.
I currently eat them at Lake Taco, or Perry's.
The choice is entirely random as both offer good product. Beer Beer Beer

no amount of good batter can make talapia taste like proper fish and chips. never mind the smallness of it and the bones. that guy in riberas[magana?] used to make it half decent untill he stopped using maui maui. haven't been back since. he also got rid of the outside tables and it's too hot inside his place.

Chippie also means an irregular heroin user, often a prostitute and the type of person stupid enough to think if they do not use the drug regularly, then they will not become addicted.

I'm afraid to ask, but what is he using now?

I complain even when they substitute haddock for cod across the ocean. Cod has been overfished, so here comes the second team. Talapia or mahi mahi/dolphin/dorado couldn't even make the team in the UK or Ireland.
That's why you have to go with/for the batter here and pretend what's inside.

I delivered milk with the local milkman, and the route ended at a factory.
On Fridays they had fish and chips in the canteen, and they would save me all the leftovers.
If only I had been old enough to wash them down with a pint of the black stuff. Beer Beer Beer

And in Washington and Oregon, the preferred fish seems to be Halibut?

The best I've had are a similar fish taco place on Cajellon del Aguilo, corner of Constituyentes. Cheap, plentiful, lots of camaron, pulpo and pescado choices, and a big cart of stuff to put on them. MAP Just about four blocks west of where Parque Agua Azul meets Independencia. Going there tomorrow morning on the way to CostCo, in fact.
