Cost for Mexican license plates

Finally had an appointment in Guadalajara more than a month after our pedimento was issued in Nuevo Laredo. Had no idea what the cost would be. Just to let those interested....cost for license plates for our 2005 Town & Country was about 3800 pesos AND that is only until the end of this year...2 weeks. Have to pay the 2014 registration in Chapala after Jan.1.  This vehicle feels like a bottomless money pit 

My jaw dropped at that figure, Joyfull. This whole car thing is ridiculous. I am rethinking keeping a car down here.

I have a 2005 Town & Country and my refrendo (registration, sort of) for 2013 was $345.00 pesos. You shouldn't have to purchase new plates now that your van is nationalized.

Maybe the rate was pro-rated and the yearly rate is higher?

The annual renewal costs far less then the cost for original issue of plates.

Are all plates due to renew in January or is it by last number on the plate?

The 3800 pesos was a whole bunch of fees including the plates. Our 2003 Mexican Honda Civic cost 345 pesos to register in 2013. I am assuming registration for 2014 will be more in line with our Honda.

When I bought a used car there were all kind of fees and taxes the first time I got my registration. Its normal. You could have saved money by getting a smog test at registration and they discounted something or another if I remember correctly.

If you get your renewal in January (don't forget to have a good smog test if your car is older) you get a discount so I and others do it than.

Thanks, Zed. I am going to be nationalizing my car next year and this info helps.

The "requirement" for a smog check is annual, regardless of the age of your vehicle.
The month in which it must be done is based on th elast digit of your licence plate.
e.g. a plate ending in 5 would have to be checked by the end of May.
It is my understanding that the discount on the annual licence fee is based on when you pay it, and not on a smog check.
There was an article in the Guad Reporter last January which spelled out the discount structure and the new "online" procedures that you could follow.
I tried the online approach, but was unable to pay online.
Instead, I printed an invoice from the online system and paid at the bank in January.
I was supposed to receive my sticker in the mail, but when it had not showed up by June, I went to the office to check on it.
The person there walked over to a filing cabinet and pulled out a rather large pile of stickers, and gave me mine.
Apparently a lot of people had not picked theirs up.
This year, I will just go into the office.

The smog test gave me a discount on the taxes when I bought a used car when I registered it for the first time in Chapala this is different from
the discount when you renew your registration. Biggest discount in January and than it goes down. I also thought new cars didn't have to have
a smog test for five years??? Have the rules changed that much Zen???

My 2013 car, bought in sept 2012, had to be tested in May 2013.
I got a nice sticker, but who ever checks them?
In Ontario, if your car required a smog test, you could not renew your licence until it was done.
