Sundown - if you want an intelligent and informative view of what is going on, go to Chapala.com under their Mexico General part of the web board. You are right - this is an important political issue where the new Presidente is (finally) taking the same approach as the old Presidente - to establish the 'rule of law' in Mexico within the next 12 years.

no need to go there as it is somewhat of a clone of the info in the crime section here. as here, borderland beat is the prime source. understand this, borderland beat uses many media sources for their reporting.CHILLIN wrote:Sundown - if you want an intelligent and informative view of what is going on, go to Chapala.com under their Mexico General part of the web board. No - Pedro, Sundown is entirely right, its about justice, not crime. Borderland beat has a clear agenda to stir things up, while having no accountability. I get my information from authorities like Professor Rio, who is very good writer and has a clear handle on the situation.

Just in time for the highest avocado consumption weekend of the year - the Super Bowl.
"Today, Americans are expected to consume 79 million pounds of avocados around the championship game. For those keeping score, that's roughly 158 million avocados."

These are unlikely to be Mexican avocados. They were banned in the U.S.A. for 84 years, only to be lifted in the 1990's. The way U.S. suppliers compete now is to specify fancy packaging, like clear blister pack, which the Mexican producers do not have easy access to, or brand marketing (such as Hass). The US growers also have storage facilities which stop fruit decay using inert gases - they can then extend the supply season way beyond what the Mexican growers can do.

I think you are very wrong.
"The season also came with heavy investment in the United States to promote Mexican avocados.
“This allowed volume to reach a level never seen before, with more than 517,000 MT of Mexican avocado marketed to our neighbor to the north. This is 44% more than the previous season,” he said.
The main export markets for Mexican avocados are the United States, Japan, Canada, France, Costa Rica and El Salvador.!"

Say what?
From the linked article:
"Avocados from Mexico and other south-of-the-border points – the source of more than half of those consumed in the U.S. – are in season four times a year. And the Super Bowl happened to be an excellent excuse to market around one of those seasons.
"It was a way to get the season going and get the product on the shelf," says Emiliano Escobedo, executive director of the Hass Avocado Board. "Super Bowl is the ideal time. It is the largest party day in the U.S. after New Year's Eve and Halloween. And I like to say avocado people are party people."
In our supermarkets and farmers markets, the displays utilize boxes saying "Product of Mexico". Maybe they are trying to fool us?

The original Hass avocado tree was grown in Orange County, California. All Hass avocado trees are descendants of that single tree. The Hass orchards in Mexico were all planted to meet increased demand for them in America.

I haven't been shopping in the U.S.A. for quite some time. There is a public relations nightmare brewing for Mexico though - google "blood avocados" - there is a significant consumer movement to boycott Hass avocadoes from Michoacan.

No- my reasoning was based on the Minister of Agriculture (equivalent) for Jalisco very recently reporting to the Guadalajara Reporter that Jalisco agriculture exports to the U.S.A. were hampered by a lack of specialty packing materials, that serious money was going to be dedicated to change that.
I am surprised that Mexico could obtain a 50% market share in just a few years. It has to be price.
I would not be surprised if the U.S. advocado growers give this 'blood advocado' thing some traction ($$$$).

I hope those cartel guys are law geniuses - look at the requirements to ship Hass advocados into the U.S.A. from Michoacan.

Michoacanos have for many years had a bad reputation with other Mexicans for being(peleoneros)ie;touchy, macho and quick to fight,I wonder if that propensity hasn't been a factor in their current problems.

While you are making comment about US Shipping Regulations, please tell us when the last time was that you were personally involved in commercial shipments Mexico to the US.

It's not such an intelligent discussion. Lots of people jumping up and down and hopping mad about something of which they have limited knowledge...and a lot of mindless partisan rhetoric.
