Safe Travel Letter for Returning a Car to the U.S.

Would anybody know if a person could get one of these himself without using a facilitator, and what would the cost be and where would a person go to get it.  How does the 5 days work - do you tell them in advance what days you will be travelling on or do you fill the dates in yourself?  How long in advance can you get this letter?

The program is called Retorno Seguro and it is operated by   Hacienda / SAT, the parent organization over Aduana.   The permit is free.

Since the permits are for 5 business days,  (which overlaps a weekend), they effectively give you 7 days to travel from the date the permit is issued.    In other words, you go apply for your permit just before you are ready to travel.

You likely want to find out how long your SAT office is taking to process the Retorno Seguro applications, to help with your travel planning.   Various SAT offices take between 1 day and 5 days to issue the letter, so your local office's timing may affect your travel plans.    SAT agents will tell you what day to return to pick up your permit.   SAT has been reliably hitting those predicted dates, so it is not like INM whose projected completion dates are not reliable.

The letter is free. You need to go to your local SAT office. Because your car is illegally in the country there is no advance application. Only apply when you are ready to go NOB. 5 business days.
