Re: American Legon
I enjoy going to the Amer. Legion for lunch. They serve down-home cooked meals and have specials such as lasagna on Wednesdays. It is a large portion and I usually bring home half of it. I can't comment on events, etc. because I have only been there for breakfast and lunch. BTW, breakfast is served all day.

Oh I used to love to eat there when I could eat that kind of food they serve, and it is very economical.
I have been to only a couple of events, always fun. I have no experience with the bar.

Re: American Legon
Its a fun place not at all like many American Legions in the US. They have an auxiliary that
anyone can join. Use to go there when I first got here. People are very friendly. You don't
have to be a US vet. Everybody welcome. Nice for that and other things. Good place to
meet some people. Kinda like a meeting place in Chapala like LCS is in Ajijic.

Re: American Legon
I'm in the legion all the time. Helps that it's right around the corner. Nice people. Usually always a group of people there. Food is served until 3pm each day. On Saturday there is a fish fry. It's like 40 pesos and gets you fish, cole slaw and fries I think. Not a fish eater so can't swear to that. Sunday is burger day. 40p gets you a cheeseburger, baked beans and potato salad.
I'm not sure what time happy hour ends daily, but there is one. Fairly cheap drinks. Place usually shuts down around dark most nights.
As for events, they are fairly frequent. They just had a dog show on Sunday. There were prizes and such. Most events are food based - meatloaf cookoff, Italian night, etc. There is sometimes music or other entertainment. There are weekly poker games, a library, frequent visits by members of the US consulate, a woman who does massages, etc, etc. As Zed said, anyone is welcome, so no reason not to at least check it out for yourself.

Re: American Legon
Happy hour is Mon-Fri 3pm to 6pm. Saturdays and Sundays I think the happy hour is all day or from 3pm to close? I think the beers are $13 or $14 pesos, and mixed drinks are $23 pesos for TWO. Mon-Sat open until 8pm. Sundays until 7pm. Unless there are more than 8 people and they have to stay open later.
Food is really good and like others have said, affordable.
Technically not just anyone can join the Ladies Auxiliary. If you want to join and have voting rights you have to have an immediate family member Military tie. I believe any lady can be a social member. As for the Men's side, I believe you must have a military affiliation.
Great group of people down there. Actually, some of the best people I have met here lakeside go to the Legion.
The events are great. There is one big one each month. The first Saturday of each month is a Bazar. Anyone can sell there, not just members. Tables are $30 pesos for non-members, can't recall what it is for members.

Re: American Legon
Please don't misquote me and quit being nasty about LCS. I could say some things about the legion that I don't like but my Mommy trained me well unlike many of you. Be glad both the American Legion and LCS exist and more the better if they are different. Something for everyone. The Legion is not for everybody and the same for LCS.

Re: American Legon
Zed, I think you have mistaken gentle teasing for being nasty.
I, for one, meant nothing nasty about LCS or the Legion. The irony for me is that even though they serve some of the same functions, they go about it differently. The spirit of the two places is very different.

I just wanted to clarify Saege's very correct statement, because it can be misleading. Yes, you have to meet the qualifications she specified to join the legion, and at least on the man's side must have served during certain military 'episodes'. However, you don't have to be a member to enjoy all the benefit the Legion offers. Everyone is welcome. You don't even have to be American. I've seen Canadians there. Really. Shocking, I know. I didn't think they went outside either. Our Mexican neighbors are also heartily welcomed come by for food, drinks, events, etc. They'll honestly allow anyone in. You know, except for Belgians. Damned Belgians.

Re: American Legon
What about French people?
You know it was established here in Mexico, 150 years ago that one Frenchman has the value of two Belgians.
I think that rate of exchange still stands.

How so?....as this was a POW exchange and how else could the Mexicans have evaluated them?
But then the French fought to the last Englishman in two world wars, so maybe you are right.

Having read all this.... I just called our king and he says that it is high time for the Belgian troups... all 7 old tanks, the 3 senior soldiers and the all female, cheerful Belgian waffle brigade to invade the US.

Either invasion or stealth entry of the US, just like here, the Belgian(s) will destroy the local, indigenous chocolate industry.
