Chapala says bye bye to parking meters

The municipality of Chapala has revoked the concession for the parking meters and put closed down tapes over the meters.

Perfecto!!!!!

Great! But what about the 44-million-peso cancellation penalty that was written into the contract? Has the city found a way around that? Or will the next administration just inherit the problem?

Why have they shut down the meters?

Lerdo recently installed similar meters, and they have done wonders to transform the parking problems in the city center. There was some bitching at first, but now most people seem to be on board with the meters.

There were many irregularities with the contract, such as there was no public bidding as well as the meter company did not respect their obligations in the contract and the city only got 20% of the fees, not to mention the illegal booting of cars that was never in the contract and is unconstitutional.
