I've never really taken a look at San Miguel, paid very little attention to past comments about it and just from surfing online today it sure seems to have a different feel. Maybe it was the video tour of John Davidson's custom home, idk.

SMA is quite public about current crime. From the recent posts on their security facebook page, sounds like all to familiar stories.

Is it a good time to visit SMA? Aside from socializing, museums and eating is there anything to do there?

Lot's of beautiful old buildings and what not. Personally I prefer Guanajuato however both are worth a visit and only 45 minutes apart. You can also visit Dolores Hildalgo and Leon while over that way.

Bob, how far away is Leon from SMA, that's somewhere I've always wanted to go.   I'm not too excited about SMA.

Leon is a side trip on the way to SMA. It is about 1 1/2 hours away from it.
