I watched "Smoke Signals" the other day. A great movie. I had forgotten this song/poem. While it perhaps should be in the music section, it reminded me that for many people the upcoming holiday season can be a reminder of things much darker than gifts, good food and friends. It is also a time of death, domestic violence, and terrible family battles - often fueled by alcohol. Just be aware that the people touched by this darkness are not soothed by words, but just time and patience.

Yes, Evan Adams is an extraordinary individual. He became a Medical Doctor in 2002 and since has contributed important, groundbreaking work for the gay community and aboriginal health. He is also a very funny man. I used to watch his variety show on the aboriginal television network.

I have to say, though, that he did not write this poem. It was written by Dick Lourie - one of the original "beat" poets.
