Auto insurance
Is it possible to buy Mexican auto insurance for a USA plated car in Ajijic/Guadalajara?
I am trying to determine is it's cheaper in Mexico, and also having to deal with local companies in case of accident.
If yes, any recommendations?

Re: Auto insurance
If someone will send you the contact information for Jesus Tejeda/AXA in Guadalajara, he will send you a policy by e-mail and take your credit card. A search for his name should get the same result on this or the other board. Sorry, I no longer have his card handy.

Re: Auto insurance
Yes, gvprod, definitely possible to buy insurance here around Lake Chapala for a USA-plated vehicle. i think that most car insurance agents around here can write you a policy. Price is probably about the same, depending on which state you lived in in the USA. Cost of insurance for a Mexican-plated car is actually more expensive.
Just remember that your plates need to match your immigration status or the insurance coverage is invalid. That is to say, if you have Residente Permanente status, you MUST own a Mexican-plated vehicle. If you have Temporal status on your visa, then it's okay to own a USA-plated vehicle.
As to insurance agents, i personally like the folks at Bellon Insurance across from Super Lake in San Antonio, but i've not had a claim against Qualitas (the insurer they primarily use), so i can't tell you anything good or bad about that.

Lewis and Lewis online. Policy is in English and Spanish. They use Qualitas as underwriters. Very easy to understand and good price.

No matter who one uses, make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. There are different levels of 'coverage' no matter which underlying company is being used. I have found San Xavier Insurance (online), who uses MAPFRE, to be a little cheaper for the policy I get, but I have actually never had to 'use' any insurance I've purchased so have no input there.

Re: Auto insurance
If both my wife and I are shown on the US title and registration as the owners, and my wife has a permanent visa, and I have a temporary visa, can the car still be insured with Mexican insurance?

Re: Auto insurance
NEGringos, is the car Mexican plated or USA plated? Because that would make a difference.
It's not a matter of "Mexican insurance," it's a matter of which type of plated vehicle you want to insure.
As to the matter of whose visa predominates when both a permanente AND a temporal have their names on the title, i'll leave that to much more knowledgeable minds than mine.
