Count your change at the fish monger, bottom of the tianguis
So this morning I wanted to buy two kilos of shrimp from the fish mongers at the tianguis. I have been a faithful customer of the sellers almost at the bottom of the tianguis , on the west side., for several years. I started using them, after the fellow selling shrimp, about half way down, was caught significantly shorting the weight.
I was served by the father, and I asked the prices and I chose the shrimp at $170. pesos per kilo. I asked for 2 kilos. Handed over a $500. peso bill, and received $120. pesos change. I didn't walk away, as I suspected he thought I would, but stood there with my hand out, waiting for the rest of my change, $40. pesos. I then asked for my money. He pointed to the Christmas tip container, and said he would put it in there. I told him, no, that it was my money, and could I please have my change. He then tried to tell me that the shrimp were $190. pesos per kilo, not $170. I told him no, they were $170. pesos per kilo, as he had just told me that a few minutes ago. Finally his wife told her husband to give me my change. This guy tried three different ways to keep from giving me the correct change. Dumb move on his part, as I will not be buying shrimp from these people for a very long time, if ever. I don't like people trying to cheat me, and having the nerve to try it on for size three different ways, after they get caught. I am now wondering if they have been shorting the weight, as well.
Be very careful, always ask the price before, know how much change you should receive, count your change, speak up if it is not the correct amount, and do not walk away until you get it.

I realize that there is a principle involved here and repeated occurrences would result in a nice "bonus" for the seller. But, realistically, you are talking about $3.33 on a $28.33 purchase. Just under 12% - tip territory. I am not condoning cheating but this is not the crime of the century.
