Is there a way to dial a number on your telephone to block a number? I'm being robocalled 8-10 times a day asking me to make a payment on an account that I do not have.

I would suggest you go to one of the TelCel offices and ask them whether they can fix this. The super-nice lady at the TelCel office on the side street next to El Torito is very helpful and speaks English. I think she can take care of this for you.

Try the TelMex office across the street from El Torito. There is a number you can call to put your self on the Mexican "No call" list but I doubt that it works for debt collectors.

PROFECO, Mexico's consumer protection agency has set up a toll free number to register your phone number in the do not call registry so you will not receive solicitation calls, businesses violating this registry can face stiff fines.

For Guadalajara and Mexico City dial 9628-0000 and other areas (like Chapala) call 01-800-962-8000 from the phone number you want to register

Options are in Spanish but once you call choose option 1 (hit the 1 key) to register and then hit option 4 to block all solicitation calls

Report violations to 01 800 468 8722

Thank you. I will definitely do that. But as you say, it probably won't apply to these calls.

You could always try an answering machine and monitor it, or get something with caller I.D. and know the number of the caller you don't want to talk w/and then don't answer. They may get tired of trying.

I assume this is a Mexico debt collector and not from NOB. If NOB, there is a lot you can do under the FDCPA.

I do have caller ID. But the calls come all hours of the night and day. It is a recording telling someone with an Hispanic name that they owe money. It's a computer generated call. So they never tire of calling. I do know the number, which is why I want to block it.

There is a TelMex clerk over where you take a number who normally sits at the first desk. He has curly hair and wears glasses, sorry, can't remember his name. He is very helpful and an expert problem solver. Ask him for advice and if there is no solution ask him to change your phone number.

I understand your frustration. The relentlessness of credit collection agencies here is amazing. When one agency gives up, they pass the names down to the next layer. A deadbeat lived at our address with his girlfriend and used the phone number we inherited from her (the owner) and over seven years later, the credit card companies still send mail here and still call, though less frequently. I wish I'd changed our number in the first year, but had no idea how persistent the callers would be. It may be worth it to go that route.
