I am still debating which nexus 7 tablet to get before going on a cruise. Will 3g work while on a ship and circumvent using the ship's wifi?

Not very far out at sea. You will need the ship‘s WiFi, I think. The ship can connect by satellite.

No doubt about it, you will need to use the ships wifi. And be prepared for the price. We just got back from a cruise and the cheapest internet package was $59 US for 90 minutes (not continuous). And it's satellite. You could only get 3G if you were within range of a shore station and were willing to pay for data roaming.
