VLC Player problem

New to me Win7 laptop with all new software.
The .MOV movies I take with my camera have a loud machine gun like sound.
The .3gp that come out of my Iphone work fine.
Windows Media Player works fine with the same .MOV files
I deleted some nice videos until I figured out it was VLC Player
