Mother nature doesn't like Cancun
Those white sandy beaches have been invaded by seaweed. Think anyone will notice?

We all have noticed. The sargassum has been around for 8 months. It really sucks. It has hurt tourism in the whole Caribbean region.

Well at least it isn't the green slime. I don't mind seaweed as long as I can swim past it and find a relatively clear place. I've been reading some Cancun hotel reviews and people act like it's an undesireable feature of the hotel itself, managment should do something, ya know?
We will be leaving for Cancun in a Couple of weeks, yay!

Now that's an impressive photo.
So it's been piling up on the beaches for 8 months? I guess what happens in Cancun stays in Cancun...

Jajaja....I hardly noticed the seaweed.
Seriously though, I can't imagine why they wouldn't be raking that crap up on a daily basis.

Re: Mother nature doesn't like Cancun
In the Caribbean (many islands) they rake it and take it off the beach, in Mexico they bury it so when the tide come up it is out on the beach again.

Here is some more info on the sargassum problem.
From a local web forum:

Here is a recent government initiative.

That is a freaking lot of seaweed! The hotel we are booked at does rake it up every day, I can't imagine what they do with it. Buuuut the government is "monitoring" the situation so wow, what a relief that is.

Re: Mother nature doesn't like Cancun
Where I am living now, they are lining the sides of the road into my bay with it and the road to our cenote. We have over a mile of dried sargassum 2 feet deep. Some days the crews can get ahead of it and at other times it is just overwhelming.
Most places don't bury it anymore. There has been an educational program in place to stop that practice since the turtles won't lay eggs in it.

Re: Mother nature doesn't like Cancun
We fall in where it is clean of the sargassum. Sometimes we come up in the middle of a patch. The water is not as clear as it usually is. Instead of being able to see a couple of hundred feet underwater, visibility is about half that.
It has killed the sports fishing season. It is hard to keep the hooks baited in that stuff.

Here's a link to the story from the Mexico News Daily site....http://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/a-seaweed-dilemma-on-the-beaches-of-qr/
What they're mostly concerned with during the cleanup is trying not to disturb the turtle egg laying areas!

Ah, so playa boy lives in Cancun? We will be staying in the hotel zone but we will have a car. Where can we go to rent a boat that will take us out snorkeling and provide the equipment, Playaboy? We will have a small group.

I live in Playa Del Carmen 90% of my time and Lakeside 10% now. I just need to sell the house in Chula Vista.
I don't get to the hotel zone much except when I have visitors.
I would go snorkel with the whale sharks. It is amazing to swim with the biggest fish on the planet. You can catch a boat out of Puerto Juarez for a nice day trip. Have fun
