Someone gave one of the local vets a turtle and he asked me to find a home for it. It kinda looked like a red eared turtle form NOB. I put him in local pond but assumed he was not a snapper. Would have been more careful playing with him if he was a snapper is my concern.

Since the lirio is such a big problem for Chapala what are the chances of signing on those responsible for the upstream dams to help with the lirio control downstream? Much of that lirio is the equivalent of our neighbours throwing their garbage into our yard. If anyone else has seen them, the backwaters to the dams upstream are wall to wall lirio at this time of year. The dams serve as points of accumulation for any lirio moving downstream. When they open the dams, that solid mat comes our way.

Since the lirios are already backed up against the dams it makes sense to me that the damn keepers should skim them for compost before opening the dams. It just seems the logical and responsible thing to do. IMOHO. Anyone out there know more about this?

Lirio makes lousy compost because it absorbs heavy metals and chemical runoffs...in the past it is poisoned and sinks to the bottom of the lake....not a great solution but liriob does slowly get disposed of.

The lirio is actually healthy for the water quality of the lake, which is why it is not being cleared from the lake.

Some pics of the last couple years of lake level at Ajijic malecon.
This year has the makings of a good year for the lake.

You'd know if it was a snapping turtle.  They'll take off if they can..but if trapped, are very aggressive. They can take your finger off...but you'd have to put it within their reach. We have several large ones in our stock pond, but have to watch them with binoculars.  They're very shy and submerge at the least disturbance.  Their shape is different too.  They're not rounded like most turtles, but much flatter.

The greater threat was probably salmonella---no bite needed.

The most common pet turtles to be found around here are the red eared sliders. That is the type I have. They can be bought at almost every pet store here and NOB. They are all over Vancouver as people have released them into local ponds and creeks up there. While not native to the area they adapt quite well. I assume they get released here too and I am surprised the lake isn't full of them. They are on the top 100 most invasive species list.

Probably evaporation having some effect since it has been relatively dry and hot the past 2 weeks. Hopefully the nightly rains come again.

While we haven't had much rain in the past 3 weeks and regardless of what may be posted on some govt sites, the lake is continuing to rise. There was another substantial mass of lirio in the lake this morning and you can no longer walk along the lower beach off the Ajijic malecon as the water is touching the lower seawall in several places. This is a big change from the previous day.

It must be raining upstream where it counts.

The lake will go up till October. Many years it has gone up quite a bit in September so it is not over by a long shot.

Yes, agreed. I guess the point I was trying to make was even though it isn't raining here it must be raining elsewhere upstream.

I recently released a Mud Turtle into the lake. It was found wandering around yards in Ixthualacan. They are water turtles here and it seemed quite happy to get into the lake. Dark carapace, yellow and black bottom shell, webbed feet, closes up like a box turtle. I think someone thought it would be a good pet in high, dry Ixthualacan. Not really. It did have a healed dent in it's shell.

Is it time to worry yet.....??? No significant rain for about 3 weeks here in Centro Ajijic. On the bright side it has been one of the nicest rainy seasons I have seen with the rain we got early on coming mainly at night. Just as advertised........ Beer

I keep wondering how the predicted heavy El Niño is going to affect us. I certainly wouldn't mind more rain.
