That has happened to me in San Cristobal where the taxi had to pick me up at 4 AM to go to the airport..never showed up never answered his hone and I had to start walking in the deserted street to hail a cab..at least there they do have a few cabs at that time  but  what a pain and it is streesull as you do not know if you are going to make the plane or not..yes UBER is nice.

I have used the Miramontes (sorry if spelling wrong) for several years. Cost to airport is $500, but they have always been there at the appointed time.

This is critical to me since we often have to be at GDL at 0600 meaning leaving Chapala at 0515 just for safety.

We had one very early flight and needed to be picked up at 0230.

In cases like the above, dependability is the key; miss a plane and you're fu**ed.

I would try Uber to get to Guad for a medical appt, but not for the airport.

NOB, I live Uber.

How do you call UBER? Is it true that it only works with a "smart phone"? My cell phone is dumb as a post, but cheap to keep and seldom used. It sleeps in the car, to be used for emergancies. Suspect

Uber only works with an app on a smartphone, so far.

Per the app tonight, it's about 59 pesos from Ajijic plaza to Chapala plaza, but remember Uber fares are charged by both time and distance so the actual amount could be different, depending on traffic conditons. Also, there are only a few Uber drivers in the area, and there may be none in the evening (such as right now) Rolling Eyes  My thought is that Uber is great for day travel out of the Lakeside area but perhaps not worth bothering with locally. ¿Quién sabe hasta que lo intente?

I used UBER here on Monday. Car was there in 4 minutes. The driver said UBER has been operating here 9 months. I will be using them from now on. I was fed up with the lazy, expensive, no show taxi drivers a long time ago.

Download the app.

Thanks, rckrckr and Kiri.
Good to know that at least Uber is available in the area. Yes, regular taxi wear out people due to price and attitude ....

Couldn't agree more about the taxistas here, and how having Uber will be an improvement.

Please keep us posted on your experiences using Uber.

I sure loved Uber in California and from what I see the prices are to Guadalajara, I'll take them to treat myself to some shopping and a nice lunch once in a while. This will be a real boon to the area.

My thinking is the more we use Uber, the more it will populate in the area. Just a thought.

I was at the airport on Wednesday and noticed a huge sign at the taxi stands saying "Taxi $200 pesos". This may be to compete with Uber.

Practical matter: I have in hand a card for a 24 hour taxi; just used the service to pick up our car from the repair shop. They speak English and are pleasant and prompt:
Rogelio, Marcos and Angel: telcel:045 331 517 8948
movistar: 045 331 232 1031.
80 pesos from centro Ajijic to Escalera across from S&S.

Just took an Uber from Ajijic Plaza to Interlago Plaza. Waiting time from order moment was about 17 minutes. That Uber driver had to drive from Chapala town to my location. He was the only one available at the time (around 3PM). Cost for this trip on Uber apps was only 25 MP. I feel for him so tipped him some cash ( bypassing Uber apps ). Conclusion: Uber availability does not look promising for now, looks like.

Cheers

Great report, thank you. Maybe the demand will go up during high season - I should say high-ER season.

3 of us took an Uber this morning around 11:00 AM.  The fare including tax (which is added on after they tell you what the fare would be ) was 297.01 from Black Coffee to Andares Mall.  Coming back was total 325.17 including taxes.  Both cars were spotless with nice drivers.  The bigger car wasn't available in this area this morning but we fit fine in the basic Uber with one person sitting up front.

I'm hooked on Uber and this will make trips to Guadalajara much more frequent and easier and a lot cheaper than hiring a driver.  I tipped separately and very well because it's such a good service and wanted the drivers to get the cash right away.  I don't know how much their split is with the company but these drivers aren't getting rich and every one I've taken have been very nice young men.

If you have a smart phone, get the app.  They even give you the US $ rate as well.  I guess if you have a Canadian cc, you will get the current exchange rate for Canada after the trip is done. Doubt you can get one to the airport very early unless you prebook it.

Uber will be available more and more in the Chapala area. I use it to send documents between my Chapala and Guadalajara offices and they usually arrive within 10 minutes and charge is 250 pesos average so a great bargain for us and we can present and receive documents same day and not waste time on the road.

I have seen up to 7 Ubers in Chapala at one time, so be patient and with more use there will be more cars, only bad thing might be if local drivers are used to drive to the city, maybe they can have certain ones only take local trips to keep them in the area.
