So please explain how the floating pipe dreams of Chapala being designated a Pueblo Magico or a UNESCO World Heritage site can be deemed more plausible than casinos or mega resort developments?

By whom are they deemed more plausible? The people I know give no credence to either scenario. They are just living their lives.

No matter where you live, there's always some cadre that wants to put it "on the map". Why? So they can have "glory by association" in living in a certifiably desirable spot. I'm with Carry Bean on this one.

"I live in a village in Mexico" just doesn't have the same ring as "I live in a Pueblo Magico", does it?

Chapala and Ajijic are already suffering from the pains of rapid growth. More would not be better.
